Sticking to the Shanaplan, spending TML's cap space

Created by: jfalstaff
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2018
Published: May 28, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A hockey trade and signing to shore up the defense somewhat (with Petry and DeHaan)... plus several moves that use TML's financial might and 2018-19 cap space to restock the cupboards.

While the precise nature of the return is just a guess (would CAR part with Fleury or Bean? WPG with Petan or Roslovic?), but a sense of the moves TML's in on are in on:
1) use the franchise's resources to pay out the $7.5m bonus that ROR is due on his way from BUF to CAR -- as a 'fee,' collect picks/prospects from CAR. That doesn't affect Leafs' cap at all...
2) Take on some bad contracts that are handcuffing their teams -- Kulikov from WPG, Orpik from WSH -- in exchange for picks/prospects

Otherwise... stay the course and begin the process of transitioning Nylander to center, promoting Marlies into the top 9, etc.

$8m away from the cap ceiling, Leafs should have no bonus overage in 2019-20, so should be able to re-sign their RFAs without much trouble and take a run at some big-ticket UFAs.

this is actually pretty great. I doubt it happens, but I wish it would cuz it really makes sense for everyone. I could see the leafs trading Gardiner for Myers(as everyone else predicts) to help the right side and slide dermott back to the left

So you think one of the best 2Cs in the game who gets 55-65 pets per year is a cap dump?

i don't think he is suggesting it is a cap dump, but he is using the leafs as help for a team thats wants ROR to save money, and the leafs get compensation for spending the money on ROR while he isn't even on the team. For this year, the leafs have plenty of money to do that

No, I think one of the best 2Cs in the game is what BUF will use to acquire one of the most underrated top pairing Ds in the game.
