Trade with Tampa and Toronto

Created by: TheMooterus
Team: 2018-19 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2018
Published: May 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Tampa Bay needing to sign a ton of their young players over the next two offseasons, they really need to shed some salary. Guys like Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat, and Alex Killorn could all fetch a good return while also giving Tampa some long-term cap relief. They shouldn't (and won't) trade all of those guys, but wouldn't be surprised to see them ask one of those guys to waive their NTC. Dallas is in need of a top-6 forward and all of those guys could fit the role really well.

Trades
1.
DAL
  1. 2018 4th round pick (WPG)
2.
DAL
  1. Johnson, Tyler
Additional Details:
Dallas gets the 2nd line center that they need, and his $5M cap hit allows them to save money vs. signing guys like JVR or Neal. Having him center Nichushkin and Janmark gives Dallas a very solid top-6.
TBL
  1. Gurianov, Denis
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (DAL)
  3. 2018 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Tampa not only sheds a $5M in cap space, but they get a recent 1st round pick in Gurianov, in addition to a top-50 draft pick (which Tampa doesn't currently have) in a deep draft this year.
3.
DAL
  1. McElhinney, Curtis
Additional Details:
McElhinney can be a solid backup for Bishop and has the capability to start 20-25 games, if/when Bishop goes down with an injury.
TOR
  1. Spezza, Jason ($3,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
RFA Rights to Devin Shore

Spezza could become a good depth guy for Toronto. A change of scenery, and playing for Babcock, could help bring a little spark back into his career. Even at $3.75M, he's still pretty pricy for a depth guy. Devin Shore would be a good sweetener for this deal. He's a solid bottom-6 forward that can play all 3 positions and he's put up 30+ points in each of the past 2 seasons.

You have got some good, interesting ideas and both trades seem fair. I am just not quite sure that Tampa will be so willing to give up Johnson, a very good centerman who would be tough to give up, especially for a team which may be attempting at another President's trophy, or Stanley Cup. The Leafs trade is interesting because they really need to get Sparks some time in the NHL. and because Spezza would be a good replacement for a guy like Bozak. Not to mention, it might allow them to sign JVR rather than Bozak or Komarov. We will have to see what happens!

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll admit, I didn’t get to watch Tampa as much as I wanted to this season. You think it’d be easier for them to part with Killorn instead? Say:

Dallas Stars

Alex Killorn

Tampa Bay Lightning

Dennis Gurianov
2018 3rd Round Pick (DAL)
2018 4th Round Pick (DAL)

Yeah the ideas of both of these trades are great. Would love a guy like TJ on DAL, but can understand if TB wouldn't want to give him up. That Spezza deal makes a lot of sense. Instead of investing multiple years in a 3rd line center like Bozak/Riley Nash, they get one year of a veteran Spezza who is going to be playing for one last contract. Whether or not people think value is fair on trades, this team/post is one that fits needs and makes a lot of sense for all parties involved.

I like these trade suggestions. Johnson would be great addition to our team. But since Tampa is in win-now mode, I don't believe they'll start trading their more valuable assets until 2019 Draft, when Kucherov etc. must be resigned.

One reason they may go for that this season is because of the draft. Tampa currently doesn't have a 1st or 2nd round pick. They take this deal and they get a top-50 pick this season instead of having to wait until the end of the 3rd round. This draft is being touted as one of the deeper drafts in recent history. By the same token, next years draft is already (albeit, very early) being labeled as a fairly shallow draft. If they want to jump into this years draft, they may be more willing to make a move like this during this offseason. Only time will tell though.

Gonna echo everyone else here that I really like the Spezza trade but I would target Pickard (or Sparks) if possible and keep Shore.

Johnson would be a great complement to Faksa as middle six centers who can make a sizeable impact on offense and defense, respectively. Would really help the NHL rookie coach not depend on the big guns for every important shift. Someday, Hanzal might return as an NHL player in which case you can bump Johnson to a wing spot on the second line.

I have been intrigued by Dallas' D prospects for years and am hoping Heiskanen can make the big club. While Seidenberg was mostly awful for NYI this year he is the perfect 7D for this team, as he can sit in the press box for long stretches, mentor the young D men, and draw into the lineup if Montgomery sees too many mistakes from a young guy and wants to give him a break for a game or two.

Honestly, a reason I threw Shore into the trade is because I want to make room for Roope Hintz. He's had a very good season, and an incredible AHL playoffs so far. Sparks would be fantastic, but as far as I know Toronto wants him to be their long term future in goal. McElhinney would be a perfect stop gap for Dallas until Bow is ready to be a backup, and then Oettinger/Point after him.

Yeah, that Seidenberg signing was solely so Dallas has a capable, affordable defenseman that can draw in to 10-15 games (injuries aside) next year. I'd rather have our young prospects (Heatherington & Bayreuther) getting tons of playing time in the AHL than sitting in a press box for the majority of the season.

Thanks for the feedbacksmile
