Why would Carlson sign for only six years? The team that drafted him can offer him up to an 8-year deal, so if you want him at 6 years then he'll be asking for 8-8.5 million AAV instead...

Caps pass. They already have too many LHD. They need picks for Grubauer.

Eight years is probably what will happen. Six years is more ideal, and it's basically a best situation contract because he can get more ice time on Washington than on other contending teams like Vegas or Toronto. Both of those teams have other defensemen who already play a lot of minutes. Vegas plays all defensemen around twenty minutes a night, and Carlson probably couldn't get more than 22 on average there. Toronto relies on both PP units so there would be less PP time for Carlson plus Gardiner and Rielly play a lot of minutes so again Carlson couldn't get as much ice time. I see your point, but I'm hoping that Carlson will agree for less because Washington offers him a lot more than other teams. It's not a breaking point. If Carlson wants 8 years I'd give him 8 years. He's too good to let go.

With Orpik gone and letting Jerabek go, they'd be down to Kempny, Djoos, Orlov, Johansen, and Fleury. When Kempny's contract is up or he is outplayed by Djoos, Johansen, or Fleury, let him go and let the two best of those three play. Carolina seems like a too perfect place for Orpik and Grubauer, and Fleury or Bean is what they'd get in return on the blue line. A scoring prospect would be good too. Any suggestions?

So we trade a great young goalie for a #7 dman? Pass. I'll take Djoos and Johansen over him. But if Bean was involved then maybe, because he's worth the investment. But still, think Caps will want a 1st or at least two 2nds in return. I'd have to look at CAR other prospects to see if they would be worth taking over picks. What about Gautheir or Roy? Think those would be the only guys Caps would be interested in. If not, then a 1st (if you get another one via trade) or two 2nds.

Gauthier and Roy would be awesome. I guess why I had a low return was because Orpik is mostly cap dump and Washington can't really afford Grubauer's contract. Also, Samsonov is the future starter in my opinion, not Grubauer, but that could change.
