Lose-Lose situation with Carlson

Created by: ChiHawks34
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2018
Published: May 31, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think we can all agree the capitals must do whatever they can to keep Carlson. He is an elite #1 defenseman. The problem is the capitals don't have much cap space before or after the signing.

The lose lose situation is if you sign carlson, say goodbye to most of your depth. If you don't sign Carlson, you will lose a #1 Defenseman and some depth as well. On top of the cap issues, they must prepare for a beagle, wilson, smith-pelly, holtby, backstrom, vrana, connoly, burvakovsky, kempny, etc extensions by next summer.

Keeping Carlson at worst means making others expendable. That isn't the worst thing.

Flyers are not giving up that much for Grubauer.

Well your team is in a classic case of being between a rock & a hard place......

I do agree you have to do whatever you can to keep Carlson but as @F50marco stated you will have to make others expendable.

I would say you have to consider moving the following contracts:

    1. Brooks Orpik - great hitter and solid Dman but your team can not afford to pay him $5.5
    2. Lars Eller - I know you do not want to but who else comes next.... Backstrom, Oshie, Orlov, Holtby

If you were to move those 2 players you pick up 8 million on the cap......

    Just a thought

Yup. As good as Eller is, you do already have Kuz and Backstrom so losing a solid 3C is a necessary move to keep the #1 D. Orpik is very replaceable. He's been pretty good this playoff but he is by no means a 5.5M dman.

What do you think Washington would get for Eller in a trade?

Caps can afford losing Beagle and DSP to FA since they have younger, cheaper and similar players in the system. That, and trading Gruby and Orpik (or even buying him out), leaves enough space for Carlson and some depth signings. So I wouldn´t go as far as saying it´s a lose-lose situation, it´s tricky but it could be worse.

O man that's a terrible trade for Bura. If Caps are moving a young top 6 player they better get a 1st in return, or a great prospect.

After a solid post season, I think minimum what they paid for him. Two mid round 2nds. Could be slightly more or less depending on whose interested and how desperate they are to improve quickly.

DSP isn't getting 3 years at $2mm. Caps will offer 1 year at 1.5 or so, and let him walk if he wants more.

Eller isn't going anywhere. Literally just signed his extension. Would be bad for business to immediately turn and trade the guy once an extension is inked. Especially since Eller took term over AAV to stay.
