CAR/BUF, FLA, WPG, NYI trades

Created by: jfalstaff
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 31, 2018
Published: May 31, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) WPG salary dump -- TOR acquires a F who isn't quite able to make the Jets to build a skilled 4L that can score (maybe they can Roslovic instead?)

2) Hockey trade! Rumors are Pysyk might be available with expensive D contracts coming on line in FLA... they're also pretty thin up front, so maybe there's a match.

3) The TOR/BUF/CAR trades are a 3-way where TOR facilitates a ROR-Faulk swap. TOR acquires ROR to pay out the $7.5m bonus due on 7/1 before sending him down to CAR (now only has to pay $1m of his salary) -- TOR's 'fee' for this is a discount on a talented young defenseman: CAR gives up Fleury for Zaitsev (CAR needs a RHD having traded Faulk) and Pickard (I suspect CAR wants insurance on Darling)... maybe a pick too?

4) And sign Jumbo Joe as 1-year 3C while Nylander learns the role. Doubt Thorton can play that much, but sheltered/PP minutes (in a Swede sandwich) toward the end of the season and into the playoffs might be a nice 'add' as the Leafs push to get out of the first round...

5) Grabner -- signed him to a 1 yr deal to add some more speed/skill to the 4th line. Would like to see Leafs cycle Leivo, Hyman, Aaltonen, Lindholm, Petan, Czarnik, and anyone else worth a shot through here until they find a mix that can add something useful to the team (a la the Marlies)

and 6) left Horton on the roster to see what shape the Leafs would be in going into the crucial 2019-20 off-season (no bonus overage counting against next season's cap)...

Sabres want more than a one for one, ROR for Faulk. Though I love that article, TOR wasnt getting paid that much to facilitate the trade

WPG trade is kinda unlikely, Thornton won’t be a good fit, don’t know why we need Czarnik and why would flordia want to give away Pysyk (although he would be a great pickup)

Gosh, BUF is dumb if that's the case. They're stocked at center, got nothing at D... CAR could use a C, have plenty of D... As the for price of facilitating, I pegged it at around the benefits of taking a bad contract (as VGK, ARI, and TOR have done over the last few years) -- a promising young player who hasn't quite cracked an NHL roster is maybe a bit on the higher end, but figured CAR would deal from a position of strength.

Why unlikely? WPG can't sign their team without a trade or two. Any trade partner will be looking to take an asset in return...
Thorton's the only C out there that'd sign for 1 year. And he nearly did last season, so not sure how/why that's 'not a good fit'
Don't 'need' Czarnik, but want to have depth and talent. Tulloch rates him a worthwhile pickup...
and Pysyk is a rumor. My guess as to why it's possible is in the description. Let's just say a Brown, B-prospect, and pick package for some sort of upgrade.

Dahlin Risto and McCabe? Scandella and Nelson werent to bad either and should improve with the influx of talent. If Bogo can stay healthy he's a decent 2 or 3 pair guy. Guhle may force himself on to the roster, and they just signed Pilot, who has potential. Also I didnt say they arent interested in Faulk, I said they'd want more than just Faulk. Toronto isnt taking on a full contract, they are taking on 1 signing bonus. I think a 2nd and 3rd is enough, but if TML can negotiate Fleury good on them. I think down the road he'll be a solid dman, just needs some time.

Faulk isnt enough. 7.5 is an inconvenience to a guy worth 5 billion, a professional sports owner who has done a poor job so far. Paying a team a 2nd or b prospect i can see, as long as the return on the sabres end makes sense. If the sum of the package buffalo receives is just faulk, theres no reason to do it. Is it just me or do carolina fans seem a little too comfortable giving up rask and/or faulk?

I don't know. I think saying Buffalo's defense is garbage is a pretty uncontroversial view. I'm glad they've got Dahlin, but, if they were to acquire Faulk, he'd immediately be the best NHLer on that team (until Dahlin gets up to speed)

Not sure if the link will work, and know GAR isn't an end-all/be-all stat, but... https://public.tableau.com/shared/3D2DDDRRH?:display_count=yes

I'd rather keep Borgman than take the unnecessary cap hit and play of Kulikov. Borgman takes Gardiner's place next year and the cap space might be necessary.

I think Dermott takes Jakes #2 LHD spot...but I believe Palhal is suggeting Borgman gets his roster spot.

Haha....$7.5m in an inconvenience. I enjoyed that one. Funny because it's true.

I think Carolina fans are eager to trade Faulk/Rask in the same fashion Leafs are eager to trade Nylander or Kapanen/Brown. In a perfect world we'd probably like to hang on to those assets but recognize you need to trade value to receive it.
