why take risks on these players that haven't shown a lot when you have a top 10 player already?
Long Answer
I don't think I would. Whole thing would be contingent on Signing Tavares.
Matthews is nasty, but he's not McDavid. Watching him disappear in the playoffs would make me nervous. Especially because Marner was so good. I know he's young.
I am just saying if Toronto can get a Top (hopefully) pairing D in Chychrun who is young and under control - who was a + player as a teenager playing 20m a night on a bad team, a 5th overall pick who will be Very good by all accounts. They could land another Stud D ( Boqvist, Hughes, Dobson) or Svechnikov. Plus Strome to 3rd line center with serious upside or Wing and Keep Nylander at center.
This could also allow them to Move Nylander, Lillegran and their 1st for Doughty
Domi Tavares Marner
Marleau Kadri Kapanen
Hyman Strome Brown
Johnsson Lindholm Dvorak
Bracco
Chychrun Doughty
Rielly - Zaitsev
Dermott - Hainsey
Gardiner
Short(er) Answer:
It gives them a ton of flexibility, and a known commodity in Tavares. A guy who stays at his PPG ballpark in the playoffs, not half of his regular season production. You don't have to worry about Matthews asking for too much $. You can probably get Tavares for ~10m and it might cost 12m for Matthews. It would enable you to improve D, because (they already do) you would increase the number of desirable assets you have.
Again, only way I would do it is if I had other deals in place. I don't love the deal itself, but allows flexibility without hurting you.
Plus I like the idea of Tavares and Matthews playing for their home teams.
