Matthews is so overrated. Marner is the best player on that team. I’d probably score 40 goals too if I sat in the crease and waited for the puck to arrive perfectly on my stick

Arizona overpaid here and your still complaining? Dude get out of here!

The trade sets the Leafs back in time considerably. None of those players currently make an impact at the NHL level, half don't even make an impact at the AHL level.

Matthews is overrated but your comment is a hell of a stretch. He does a lot of great things but hasn't yet made it into the rarified air the Leaf fan base thinks he has.
That being said, he is worth more than a package of B level prospects.

I believe Arizona overpaid in this trade. Strome still has potential, yes he hasn't made an impact, but he's still young and has loads of potential left. Chychrun is solid, and like Strome, still has loads of potential. Same goes for Dvorak. Crouse is a big guy that adds a defensive game to the Leafs lineup. Domi has made an impact, and will be great in Toronto. The 1st can turn into anything. However, if Arizona is getting their #1 center, Stepan has to be going the other way. 5 stars, this is a trade I can see Toronto taking, especially when they need to sign Nylander and Marner.

Any trade for Matthews won't happen and if so it needs to start with 2 firsts and Keller

Not saying it's good or bad, I don't know what I would do, but the deal isn't horrible. I think Toronto would at least think have about it. Strome and Crouse make me nervous, so I would probably say no, but if they use the $ to sign Tavares, they are better than than they are now, with a ton of assets...
      Chychrun - 1st (16th overall - 2016)
      Crouse - 1st (11th overall - 2015)
      Strome - 1st (3rd overall - 2015)
      Domi - 1st ( 12th overall - 2012)
      2018 1st rd pick (5th overall - Likely a VERY good player)
      Dvorak - 2nd rd pick

Look...I'm not going to fault you for having some fun and bringing in some big names.

I agree that the package headed to the leafs is a strong offer....but the Leafs could never accept. It'd be taking a good young core that hasn't been able to move the needle in Arizona yet and giving away the guy that has finally led the Leafs back into a playoff team. I wonder if that package would have got the Leafs to bite prior to the 2016 draft.

The other trades are being ignored right now too. Unfortunately I don't see any of them being close to viable.

Calgary is not giving you Tkachuk for that random assortment

I'd think every team in the league would take Hanifin over OEL.

And I doubt Detroit has much interest in moving AA for that return.

Here is what the leafs get for franchise superstar, 40 goal scorer as a rookie, Auston Matthews. Dylan Strome, the number 3 pick from a few years ago who has yet to make an impact in the NHL. A 14 point defenseman who is not bad but looks like a second pairing defenseman, a 37 point forward, and a guy who has 13 points in 83 career games. And Max Domi coming off back to back 9 goal seasons. Basically, a playoff team trades their best player, a guy who had 40 goals as a rookie and scored on a 45 goal pace this year, netting 34 goals in only 62 games, plays a 200 foot game, was second in goals per game this season and first in goals at even strength for 5 guys who have yet to prove they belong in a teams top 6 forwards, an ok defenseman and a first round pick. Make sense to you?

It does make sense to me, Strome, Chychrun, Dvorak, Domi, and even Crouse have big ceilings. The 1st is what Toronto wants in this deal, as they can draft a defenseman to take the place of Gardiner.

The only way TML even remotely consider trading Matthews would start with Keller + OEL + 1st + 1st + Strome

The leafs don't even want to trade Gardiner. He had a shitty game 7, and he has defensive limitations but he had 50 points as a defenseman. And all these players "ceilings" are top 6 forwards. You have a franchise player on an entry level contract surrounded by a young team the has made the playoffs 2 years in a row coming off a 106 point season. You don't mess that up

Yes, but Toronto isn't going to be able to keep Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. The best option is sell high on Matthews with his value.

Subban will be a stud for another decade, you'll be paying Weber to hobble around for the next decade.
Galchenyk is good, but you have Claude, so good luck with that.
Price is the best in the world, but not when Alzner, Benn & Shlemko are infront of him.

they 100 percent are going to be able. They have plenty of money to do it. Nylander at 6/6, Marner at 7/8.5(which might be more than he actually gets) and Matthews at 8/11.5 still gives us plenty of money

Matthews is going to be demanding more than Toronto can handle (about 12-12.5). Arizona has cap space and can afford him. Also, Toronto gets cap relief to sign some UFAs and make some roster moves.

matthews isn't going to ask for the same contract as mcdavid. I just made an armchair gm team outlining the 2019-2020 leafs roster where they keep all the players

If you think Matthews is the first guy the leafs would trade away to get under the cap then that's just wishful thinking. They absolutely have room to sign all three. Even if Matthews gets $12.5, Marner gets $10 and Nylander gets $8m. Just means that they couldn't go out and bring in any big names.

I think you just don't know the players going to Calgary. Fischer and C.Perlini were both first round picks who had good years. And B.Merkley is a good prospect who was a first round pick. Plus the draft picks it's a very fair trade. Tkachuk has a big name and was born in Arizona so it works. Detroit might move AA and to get Pierre-Olivier Joseph who was the 23rd overall pick last draft is a good deal. The Wings need to find that number one dman so getting a prospect like that is huge. Plus they get Hamilton and a 3rd.

      Long Answer
I don't think I would. Whole thing would be contingent on Signing Tavares.
Matthews is nasty, but he's not McDavid. Watching him disappear in the playoffs would make me nervous. Especially because Marner was so good. I know he's young.

I am just saying if Toronto can get a Top (hopefully) pairing D in Chychrun who is young and under control - who was a + player as a teenager playing 20m a night on a bad team, a 5th overall pick who will be Very good by all accounts. They could land another Stud D ( Boqvist, Hughes, Dobson) or Svechnikov. Plus Strome to 3rd line center with serious upside or Wing and Keep Nylander at center.
This could also allow them to Move Nylander, Lillegran and their 1st for Doughty

      Domi Tavares Marner
      Marleau Kadri Kapanen
      Hyman Strome Brown
      Johnsson Lindholm Dvorak
      Bracco

      Chychrun Doughty
      Rielly - Zaitsev
      Dermott - Hainsey
      Gardiner

      Short(er) Answer:
It gives them a ton of flexibility, and a known commodity in Tavares. A guy who stays at his PPG ballpark in the playoffs, not half of his regular season production. You don't have to worry about Matthews asking for too much $. You can probably get Tavares for ~10m and it might cost 12m for Matthews. It would enable you to improve D, because (they already do) you would increase the number of desirable assets you have.

Again, only way I would do it is if I had other deals in place. I don't love the deal itself, but allows flexibility without hurting you.

Plus I like the idea of Tavares and Matthews playing for their home teams.

Yes, but Toronto isn't going to be able to keep Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. The best option is sell high on Matthews with his value.

      Yes they will buddy

Matthews is so overrated. Marner is the best player on that team. I’d probably score 40 goals too if I sat in the crease and waited for the puck to arrive perfectly on my stick

None of us will ever score in the NHL

Do you watch hockey Matthews doesn't sit in the crease
