If you think Matthews is the first guy the leafs would trade away to get under the cap then that's just wishful thinking. They absolutely have room to sign all three. Even if Matthews gets $12.5, Marner gets $10 and Nylander gets $8m. Just means that they couldn't go out and bring in any big names.

There is no way Toronto can keep all 3 of them even with the cap space they have, especially when they are interested in Tavares. I think trading Matthews would pay out in spades. His value is through the roof and will fetch a massive return that can address the problem on the blueline, Andersen is inconsistent, bringing in a guy like Hutton in free agency would work out very well. I can see a Matthews trade being something like

      Vancouver receives:
      A. Matthews

      Toronto receives:
      B. Boeser
      T. Demko
      2019 1st

Boeser would be able to fit right in, and Tavares can be signed to a 2 year deal to play with Boeser until Boeser needs his 1st big contract. Demko is a goalie that can replace McElhinney this year and in the near future, Andersen, then Andersen can be moved. The 1st will most likely be a good 1st given the Canucks' situation. Matthews addresses the Canucks' need of a center and allows Pettersson to play protected minutes for him to develop. This trade works out for both teams, since the Maple Leafs can let JVR walk, dump some cap and sign Carlson to address the defensive problem.

      Agree and disagree.

Can the Leafs sign all 3 guys? 1000000% yes: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/714531

Can the Leafs sign all 3 guys AND Tavares? No. Not unless JT + all 3 RFA's sit down and agree to take a little less than market value in order to all play together. That would mean JT and Matthews closer to $10m, and Marner/Nylander in the $6-7m range. Also...if they do that then they're committing to building their defence from within as they wouldn't have the flexibility to bring a big name D-man in.

So again, the Leafs can definitely get all 3 big RFA's signed to rich long-term deals. But based on what other options are available to improve the team, they may opt to trade one to improve another area. I just can't see Matthews being the guy they move regardless of if they bring JT in or not.

I doubt it too that Matthews is the one getting moved. However, I believe that it wouldn't be out of the picture trading him with his value. His value is tremendous and can get a return that addresses every need in the Leafs' lineup.

Well...a legit #1 C is the hardest position to fill on a roster....so sure, you can get a great return for Matthews...but you'd be setting your franchise backwards in the process and creating a massive hole in the lineup, right at the very top.
