Worst case scenario with RFA signings - Yes they can all get signed

Created by: Juice
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2018
Published: Jun. 1, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
DISCLAIMER:

No, I don't think the RFA's sign for this much. Just making a point to anyone who claims the Leafs are doomed to lose one of Matthews, Marner or Nylander.

Just not true.

Cap is also expected to be closer to $82m for the 19-20 season but intentionally kept it at $80

Ok, but you have less then a million left in cap space, your defence is awful, you only have 20 players not 21 and that’s no giving any other young player a raise.

I think Toronto can keep all three but it will mean your defence will suffer, thin they need to do what Pittsburgh did when they signed Malkin and Crosby to big contracts, balance out their attack with cheap 3rd and 4tg line guys and trade for a top dman with term. Then when the cap goes up and your top players hit goes down you o after another elite forward, that’s what Pitt did with Kessel, they waited for Malkin and Crosby’s contracts to fit the cap then made their move.

Toronto fans just want to win now because they think they can, still a few years away and a few carefully placed pieces away.

Thanks for the comments.

I agree with you completely. In fairness, I did give young guys like Kapanen and Johnsson raises bigger than they deserve right now and, moving forward, you'd have Marleau and Martin's numbers coming off the books to give the other guys raises when their deals come up.

But yes, this is a far from ideal scenario if all these guys choose cash over building a winning team...the point was to show that the Leafs have positioned themselves to be able to get all 3 signed.

I know your numbers are to prove a point and it may or may not help the fan base, the reality is that $31M between those 3 could be $10M more than they actually get. You went worst case scenario which is understandable around here, but there wasn't a single team in the final 8 this year with a $10M+ player.

9.5, 7.8, 6M on Washington...
Vegas is maxed out at less than 6M
Winterpeg is in the 6-7.5M range
Nashville 9, 8, 7, then it drops sharply
Pitt 9.5, 8.7, 7....

And these teams are paying for players that have done something in this league and have been doing it for years.

The front office the Leafs have now is straight out of Moneyball. The assistant GM is on record as saying they don't want players that are primarily focused on money.

Bottom line. There is lots of room.

Yes...exactly....this was meant to be an extreme example to argue against every post that reads "the leafs can't keep all three"

That's up to management, not the players.

To a certain extent..yes. But I'm sure an aspect of every negotiation with the player/agent involves some sort of plea for them to shave a little off the number so that they can make the team around them better.

McDavid ASKED for less money than the Oilers offered.

Basketball players frequently take a lower salary to play on a championship team.

I think it makes a lot of difference if, take Ottawa for example, the owner is unwilling to spend to the cap. Hard for a player to take a lower cap hit to help the team build a winner when they can do so without your financial sacrifice. If a player knows ownership is willing to pay whatever it takes to win a championship, the player can make the decision to lower demands knowing the funds will be invested back into the team.

Agreed. However, normal operating procedure doesn't build a winner. Budget, salary structure, and planning are needed to get to perennial contender status and Chiarelli may not be the best example of this. Yzerman perhaps...

Yup. Chicago too. They've kind of been the first cap era team to find success and need to assess who is worth keeping and who can be spared and how to re-fill the holes. Not all decisions have panned out for them but they've stayed a cup contending team up until last season.

Summer of 2014...after 2 recent cup wins and a game 7 loss to the kings in the semis that season.

It actually kicked in earlier than I thought but my point was that once it did, the team regressed.

They'll be fine, many of those numbers are highly inflated as you mentioned.

Maybe. Is it the one done on this site? I ran a team for a bit last season but didn’t have time for how detailed it was.

If it’s playing 2nd fiddle tho and helping you assess trades I could be down for that
