I would be OK with the Habs getting Brassard for 2C, I just don't like the process of acquiring him.

EDM doesn't want Andrew Shaw, I'm almost certain. They already have a winger with a bad contract in Lucic. I'm pretty sure they don't want another.

And why are we trading Byron: a 20 goal guy with a cheap cap hit?

I understand it's going to cost us something to get a 2C. I'd be tempted to dump Shaw's salary somewhere (maybe it'll cost us one of the four 2nd round picks we have), keep Byron, and offer a better player (Galchenyuk?) to get a better 2C. When you combine Galchenyuk and Brassards deals, it means you can get a 7M$ center to play 2C. Statsny? O'Reilly?

Pittsburgh says no. They gave up a awesome goalie prospect for Brassard, they aren't trading him especially for Strome

I think Little (or Brassard) are the right players, just the wrong package to get them. Shaw is a bad contract for Winnipeg. They'll be tight against the cap. They have 20M in space to get 8 RFA's signed. In that group of RFA's they have Helleybuck and Trouba to sign (big deals, likely eating half of that cap space). I doubt they see room in their budget for a 3rd liner making almost 4M$ after signing 6 RFA's for 10M or less.

I think Shaw needs to be a salary dump in a separate deal, and then you need to hope someone wants draft picks for a guy like Little or Brassard.

Keep this in mind: if you are successful in dumping Shaw's deal, you'd have 6+M$ of cap space. Enough for Statsny? Keep in mind, you gave Tavares 10.5M$ and Danault 2.55M$... I think they get more.

Hence why I think not only does Shaw need to go, but another salary needs to go. It's why I have a suspicion that either Galchenyuk or Pacioretty is gone.
