Going for the best d-pair in the league (probably)

Created by: MelonVK
Team: 2018-19 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 10, 2018
Published: Jun. 10, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have no idea what the going rate for Karlsson is at this point, but I'd imagine Ottawa likes the cost-control of Patrick. I don't see him turning into a 1c, and if you do, you probably want to trade the other end of the fwd core - Giroux, Vora etc

Karlsson would be a redundancy on the Flyers and for that reason we pass.

Nolan Patrick has more trade value alone than Erik Karlsson.

I 100% agree with this. It's almost......almost irrelevant how much better karlsson is than Patrick. A 1 year rental vs 2 years of a VERY good player on an ELC and then his RFA status. His trade value is indeed higher than karlsson.

Well it's not really a rental since you can actually sign him from July 1st. I think fans of every team is guilty of overvaluing ones own players and prospects, and I include myself in that bunch.
I just don't see it with Patrick though, and maybe that's me watching too little of him, but I think his trade value considering his draft position is a lot higher than his actual value. Where does he go in this years draft?

And to that point - no one is projecting to be the next Erik Karlsson, not Dahlin or anyone else. Because that top 5 in the league talent is basically drafted once or twice every 10 years, and developed from later draft positions about as frequently.

I'd love to hear from an Ottawa supporter as well, but to bounce it back to you philly guys - would you trade Patrick for another Provorov? Cause put like that, Karlsson is still a level or two above him, is able to play with him, and improves your chances of winning in the next three or so years by a massive amount. Let me know, and thanks for the feedback!

I would say Provorov is going to be a better all around D man than Karlsson. Also, trading Patrick for another Provy doesn’t make sense for the Flyers because we need that 1A/1B C and that is what we have in Patrick. He came on big time and showed flashes of what he will be capable of in the second half of the year and that got us all very excited. Again to exo’s point, there is no guarantee we would be able to extend Karlsson and a D man with a cap hit north of $10 mil just doesn’t make sense to me either. Patrick is controllable for a long time.

I'm prepared to listen, but how do you project a guy to be better than the best defenseman of the last 7 years or so? I'm a Boston fan, but I think projecting McAvoy to be better than Doughty is a stretch, and that's still a tier down from Karlsson. But then, you know, opinions. I think regardless of which team you are you try to get the best players when available - I mean even Poile went after Karlsson. You have your two centers - both a shutdown play driving one, and an explosive offensive one, but I guess we can argue team building all day.

I thought I was being different posting a Karlsson to Philly trade just now.. Damn you!
I doubt Philly wants to take Ryan with their other contracts. I tried to balance the cap a bit and the main player coming from the Flyers was Konecny. His Ottawa connections probably make him attractive. (born, raised and played for the 67s).

Nope not trading our future 1c for 1 year of Karlsson. If you actually watched him the second half of the year after he had finally healed from the offseason surgery he had you would have seen that he is going to become 1c very soon. Heck he was probably our second best player in the playoffs behind Couturier. I also want no part of Ryan and his contract.
