Car blockbuster-making sense of the rumors

Created by: ChiHawk
Team: 2018-19 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2018
Published: Jun. 12, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trying to make sense of all the talk between Car and Chi. We know these players are being discussed....
Car - Faulk, Darling
Chi - 1st (Nsh), Saad, and a prospect

There is another piece that has to be coming back form Carolina and I could see Rask being that piece.

The other pieces are to pick up picks and get some space. MTL makes sense for one of their 2nd picks, and NYI needs D guys AND Forsling has a lot of upside and Rutta is a good stop gap for depth.

Hawks pick up additional picks in the 2nd round and leave cap space for the next 2 years to sign the RFAs.

How is that a fair trade for the Canes. Top four defenseman, middle six C and backup goalie for a lesser backup, overpaid winger, third liner and a first round pick is a huge steal for the Hawks

Overpaid winger who has been an all star, is a perrenial 50+ point producer, and has one down year along with the entire Hawks team is hardly Saad's fault. Then add in a 22 year old winger who's one of the fastest guys in the league with big upside (he played on the 1st and 2nd lines of the Hawks), a backup goalie to replace the cap dump in Darling Carolina wants to get ride up plus the #27 pick in a deep draft. How is that good for both sides?

Darling isn't an asset, it's a cap dump. Hawks are fine without him, but willing to take a risk to see if they can find magic again with him. Bottom line, he was awful last year and Carolina wants to dump him.

Saad isn’t overpaid LOL. He had one bad year with 35 points. He’s an all star and 2x cup winner the hawks wanted back to replace the size and two-way play Hossa brought to the team. How on earth is Saad overpaid. He would be the most likely player to have a bounce back year than anybody else.

$6M for 35 points is overpaid. So because Brooks Orpik is a 2x Stanley Cup champion, he’s not overpaid right?

Being an All star in the NHL is almost an insult, it doesn't mean anything. And for a guy who's making 6mil you'd think he would put up at least 60 points, he is overpaid and not worth much

You don't know Carolina very well, they're not a team that will eat dead salary like that

Overall I like the trade, I would take it for Carolina

Being an all star in the NHL is an insult, it doesn't mean anything. You say perrenial 50 point producer, he's done it three times, as for Duclair, other than speed Duclair doens't have much

LOL how's Hossa an asset either? Atleast the Hawks get a live body back who played well for them, his contract is cheaper than Hossa's and one year shorter plus it might lower the cost to acquire Faulk if Carolina includes him, you can put Hossa on LTIR but his cap hit only comes off once you reach the ceiling and even then I'm not sure the entire contract comes off. This scenario makes sense for both teams because Hawks take a smaller cap hit while Carolina just pays the low cost of Hossa's remaining contract. All I'm suggesting is that there's no way the Hawks take Darling unless a contract isn't sent the other way but for some reason you seem to disagree

And he's 25 which means he hasn't found his ceiling yet and had a down year like the entire Hawks org did. Look at who he played 1st minutes with (Toews, Keith, Seabs) all sucked on the 1st line. Duclair is 22, he's young and has huge upside. He's a 30+ point player at a minimum and can develop into a consistent 40+ player with the right coaching...that's damn good as a minimum cap hit and thus minimum risk.

You don't judge a player on 1 year, you look at the past several and combine that with age. Look at P Kessel in 15/16...do you think 50 points is worth $10M??? Then look at last year. Happens with the best players to have a slump.

You’re basing this on one season. The Hawks wanted a familiar face back in the locker room. They got it. They wanted someone who brought back chemistry with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. They got it. He still had 17 goals in a 35 Point season which it could’ve been worse. He could’ve had like 8. They needed someone to replace Hossa’s two-way style of game who added some strength and size. They got it. You wanna talk about overpaid? HA. Look at Brent Seabrook. There’s a real buyout option. Horrible contract given by Bowman. And by the way Saad is not the type of guy you’d expect to get 60+ points. Usually in more of the 45-55 range. They needed the fit to replace Hossa and needed Panarin out to bring back that type of player and Saad was the one. Saad knows he had an off year and he has the ability to bounce back from it.

What great conversations!

@Shifttee Not trying to be mean, but I don't think you know CAR very well. They 100% absolutely take on salary (retain salary). MORE THAN ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE NHL!!! Bickell, Semin, Lack, Wisnewski, Kruger...are (5) CURRENT examples enough? ok maybe AZ ties CAR, but doesn't beat them.

I don't like the 1 for 1 because just look at EVERY SINGLE dman being draft or brought up in the last 2 years. They all do 1 thing. They're puck moving dmen that can't play defense. AND yes, I get it, defenseman need to learn the position and it takes time, but actually playing defense is becoming a rarity. Faulk is a nice player and I would 100% trade for him because the Hawks don't have a PP Dman right now, but not for Saad straight up.

Forsberg had a better year than Darling...with zero previous NHL experience, is cost controlled and isn't 29 years old. Forsberg > Darling for trade value 100%...probably 200% smile
