It will take more than that to acquire EK.

yikes orpik in the top 4 ........

ek is great but will be gone next season bc he'll get 10-12 million so id rather keep bowey and sign green who just bought a house in dc ......maybe a positive thing to come

orlov is lhd and so is luca jo who's probably needs another year in the ahl

Five stars for getting a realistic 3rd round pick back for Orpik, even if Edmonton isn't necessarily the most likely landing spot.

I'm fine with getting EK for Bowey, a 1st, and a 2nd. He'll end up getting more salary than John Carlson, with whom the Caps just won the Stanley Cup, and who outscored him in the regular season. EK has more career points, but had some kind of injury that affected his skating most of the season, plus tragic personal problems. I think the Caps are fine with who they've got, and with a power play that's worked well together with the same top unit for three years.

That consistency has been a strenghth, and I'd rather they sign Carlson at 8M per year coming off a career year he may never equal than end up extending Karlsson at 10M before seeing if his skating is back close to 100%, and risk ending up with a huge defensive liability.

Whatever anyone posts on here, five Ottawa fans will chime in that it isn't enough. I think they just really want him to stay, and between the rough year they've had and the rough year he's had, I've decided it's not worth proposing EK trades on here. He's such a dominant offensive defenseman when he's at 100%. it's really hard to predict a fair trade for him while he's finishing healing from an injury.

In my opinion it would be a Top Prospect (Maybe that Russian Goalie), a good roster player in his early 20's (maybe Orlov or Vrana), and multiple picks (including a 1st rounder). That's just my opinion.

imo i would just keep it simple just package grub and orpik for a 2nd rounder......imo orpik has bad regular season numbers but played well in the playoffs......so i would say his value isn't negative you just gotta find a team that wants an older bottom pairing guy at a 5.5 million cap hit

I need to type up a standard Orpik refutation to just cut and paste. People really love to hate on the 2nd best hitter and shot blocker of the playoffs, who eliminated Columbus with two assists, turned the finals around with a slick GWG, and closed it out with a primary assist and smothering defense in game five.

dude you're the only person who thinks he's good .....and thats cool but the rest of the world or anyone with a pulse doesn't think he's that great.... i think a third round pick gets you someone of his abilities if his cap hit was 2-3 million

To trade him at a 3M cap hit, the Caps retain 2.5M, which is the same cap hit he'd leave if they bought him out. I guess then they get a 3rd round pick, so it's better than nothing, but I also think, given that he's publicly been assigned to spend a year mentoring each of John Carlson and Nate Schmidt on how to play defense, that most teams with lots of cap space would be lucky to have him around to mentor their young defensemen. For anyone living under a rock, Carlson and Schmidt led the Caps and Golden Knights in ice time this year, which is impressive because those teams won their divisions and then made the Stanley Cup Finals (but I won't spoil how that one ends for you).

Yeah, that could happen, but the Caps end up spending more money to retain 2.5M than they would to just buy him out, and getting no cap relief, so the return would have to be excellent. But I think at a cap hit of 3M, coming off his 2nd Cup win and his 6th straight trip to the 2nd round or more, he could even get a 2nd, like Emelin or Methot. Or just be packaged with Grubauer to get back a really talented, young defenseman who had as many hits last year. Not that any are particularly available with that kind of toughness/durability, and any offense to speak of. http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?report=realtime&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20172018&gameType=2&position=D&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=hits

If there's a chance of getting Hagg, Ristolainen, or Zadorov, fantastic. Otherwise, why not just keep Orpik, who hits an opponent every period, and makes it harder for guys to set up shop in front of the net. And yeah, I know, if it's Risto or Zadorov, they also have to throw in Connolly, and a 2nd, and even then, who knows.
