You're going to hate me for trading Nuge

Created by: mk458
Team: 2018-19 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2018
Published: Jun. 14, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Couple things to know:

1) Sekera would have to waive his NMC, but he might. He knows he'll be playing behind Nurse, Risto, Klefbom, and Larsson. So he won't get much ice time here. Also he'd be headed to NY instead of the 2nd coldest city with an NHL team, so...

2) I don't believe Yamamoto should be in the NHL next year, But knowing the Oilers, I bet they throw him right in the starting lineup in a top 6 roll

3) Cap space is extremely tight. But we don't have a first rounder in 2019, so we won't be picking up any big rentals anyways.

4) Next year Russel's NMC clause turns into a 10 team trade list. We could move him with retained salary to resign RFAs like Puljujarvi and Aberg. And guys on entry levels like Jones and Bear should be ready by then

If the Islanders lose Hickey/De Haan to free agency they will have to add a top 4 defenceman. Sekera is still a top 4 defenceman, not a cap dump! He had a disappointing year after recovering from an injury, so his value is low, but he's absolutely still a decent top 4 defenceman. Brandon Davidson is a good 6th or 7th D who didn't really work out with the Islanders.

Excellent scenarios across all boards!!
Losing RNH 4 Risto would be acceptable.
Well done..-~

Your not getting Risto I’m that deal. RNH isn’t worth a top end defenceman, especially one that over the course of the past 3 seasons has out produced RNH lol

The state of this board... Risto is probably the 4th best defenseman on that roster

wow, really! You may be the only CF GM who would make that assessment.

Botterill counters with this. Edmonton does not lose any current roster players and gets a RW who had great chemistry with McDavid in Erie:

Yamamoto, K + 2018 1st +2018 2nd + 2018 3rd for Ristolainen, R + Nick Baptiste.

What do you think?

I wouldnt say Risto is a top pairing guy, hes a 3-4 for sure, he puts up offence, but bleeds defensive responsibilities.

2b/3a, but not the 4th best among those defensemen. I may be over valuing Ristolainen, but I would not trade Ristolainen for any of the other defenseman one for one.

Klefbom and Larsson for sure. Both are much cheaper, Klefbom has comparable offense if played the same way - but isn't because he's a better two way defenseman. Larsson complements that and if you watched the world cup he's not immobile, it looks more like a coaching issue tbh. I'd rank them Klefbom > Larsson > Risto>=Nurse (more for development potential, I do honestly think he's 4 of the bunch)

Thank for your comment, it is much appreciated.
I do see your point about Klefbom. I guess I will succumb to your position and agree with you. Nice job thank you.
