Moving into Top 5

Created by: DrZaius_PhD
Team: 2018-19 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Penguins rumored to be interested in moving into Top 5 for this draft. Dahlin is unanimous #1, Svechnikov and Zadina are RW (a position of strength for the Pens), and it doesn't make sense for them to deal a roster player for a defenseman that may or may not make the team. It's easier to insulate a young forward than it is to cover up for a young defenseman.

Domi has also been linked as an interest to Pittsburgh. If Tkachuk is available at #5, Brassard goes to the desert to be a #1/2 Center and give Strome another teacher. Brassard can also be flipped at the deadline for a cap hit of 1.5mil(!) if the Coyotes retain max allowable (50%). The Coyotes are stacked on LW: Keller, Perlini, Domi, Crouse, Dvorak, Burke. Sprong balances their scoring playing on the RW. Penguins can add another prospect or a mid/late round pick.

Depending on the Sprong/Domi contracts, Arizona is taking on very little additional cap hit allowing them to take on one or two bad contracts and stockpile some picks in the mid to late first round and increase their prospect pool.

Carolina is flush with D and willing to make some moves. Penguins can add a later round pick to even things up since this is a "cap dump" although a 25 year old that scores 20 goals a year for 3mil isn't bad.

Center depth could become an issue if 87 or 71 get hurt but there should be enough cap space to make a trade mid season if it comes to that.

He scored twice in 8 games and was sent down because the Penguins are stacked with RWs. He scored 32 goals in 65 games in the AHL as a rookie.

his nhl career he's played 26 games and has 5 points......

also he played 8 games......he scored 2 goals in one game vs the nyi......so yeah if you want to throw that stat out there thats fine but take a closer look and playing one good game isn't the same as being a a solid player.....

sprong is a peg player in the ahl.......so is Beau Bennett......again ahl numbers are misleading Eric Tangradi also scored 30+ goals

just saying..... i said might be a bust long story short a solid nil guy doesn't get you domi

Sheahan had similar outputs playing 3C that Sutter and Bonino had playing as Penguins 3C.

Sheahan proved this past year that he was not a 3C. That is why Rutherford went out and gave up a 1st and a stud goalie prospect to get a 3C at the deadline.

Rutherford brought Brassard in to play with Kessel on the 3rd line. If you want your 3rd line to be a 3rd scoring line, no Sheahan wasn't a perfect fit. That's not how my team is configured.

Why don't you just include the whole Penguins Franchise while you're at it. My goodness bud. Your trade ideas are so lopsided in the other teams favor that they don't add up.

How so? The Penguins aren't re-signing Brassard. They're trading away a late 1st round pick. You are replacing Sprong with Tkachuk. Sheary doesn't make sense to keep if he is playing in the bottom six.

That's not really a fair comparison on Sprong. 18 of those games were played when he was 18 years old. He went back to the QMJHL.
In his final year there he averaged almost 2 points a game! That's pretty unheard of. He averaged over 1 goal a game. I bet off the top of your head you can't name me a player who averaged almost 2 points a game.

He played very well in WBS. He's going to be a good NHL player. To say he "might be" a bust is laughable at best. He has all star level talent, he's only 20 and didn't go through a real organization like the NCAA. So he needs to put it all together yet.

laughable at best? its laughable to think him and brassard gets you the 5th overall and domi.......its also laughable to think success at the ahl level easily translate to success at the nhl.......its laughable at best to assume things like this but in reality he's a poor man kessel it would be cool if he turn out to be good but i wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be a 20-25 goals a year guy while playing w a crosby or malkin....'

i said he might be a bust due to his success at the ahl level and that not being able to translate to the nhl......i didn't say he was a bust but!!!! you being a pens fan i understand why this would upset you just fully read before you start crying......might be a bust isn't being a bust.........

was never comparing him to Kessel.
But this assuption you have that you are either an all pro or a bust is very unrealistic.
His odds of being a bust with that kind of talent is low, very low. Not saying he's going to be an all star. But bust, no. You should know better than to even assume anything like that. He has already shown way to much talent to ever be considered a "bust" especially at 20.

maybe our misunderstanding is when you said star potential .....to me thats a kuzy seguin hall...........elite would be crosby ovi malkin..............and in this situation i assume bc he was trading him for the 5th overall the expectations would be a 40 goal scorer similar to a kessell talent
