All Washington has to do to match the total $ value of the deal is offer 8 years x $7mm. Which they'll do.

A team will either have to sign and trade to give JC the 8 year deal, or offer 7 x $9mm to really make a tangible difference between what WSH can do and what the market can.

Then that deal won't happen, Theo has way more value, He is 22 with no arbitration rights, probably getting a bridge deal that will keep him an RFA 3 years from now.

If the return in Namest and a 3rd, just as soon look elsewhere

I think you're confused, Carlson isn't an RFA, this isn't an offer sheet

I'm not confused at all. As a matter of fact, I think you are confused. I'm saying given two equal offers, John Carlson will elect to stay in Washington. He lives in DC year round and his wife's family is from DC as well. Any team will need to tangibly beat WSH's offer to land him.

That's not a good reason to trade Theodore. Keep him he has too much potential. And Namesnikov has really been good for one half season, he's been average for years.

McPhee drafted both Green and Carlson. He knows them both. If either is looking to move and/or doesn't get a spot with the Caps, he's the next guy they'll call.

They both have houses in DC, and some friends on the team, but it could be argued either way whether or not the Caps have cap space for both.

That 8th year on Carlson makes it really hard to price him out of Washington's reach. Just super expensive, especailly as the total value of the contract goes up. If some other team offers 70M, at a cap hit of 10M, Washington matches with 70M, at a cap hit of 8.75M. The Caps are getting a 1.25M discount per year. Offer him 77M at a cap hit of 11M, and Washington matches with 77M at a cap hit of 9.625. Washington has to trade Orpik, and let Kempny and Beagle walk, but they can match. Offer him 12M per year, over seven years, for 84M, and Washington can match at 10.5. The cap his is getting to be a bad deal, but the discount is up to 1.5M. If Vegas offers 20M a yearx7 years for 140M total, the Caps could match at a cap hit of 17.5. Their discount would be 2.5M per year. It's a really good deal. Of course. They wouldn't match that. You write a 20M/year contract on 28 year old John Carlson and he is a Golden Knight if he wants to be.

And the Caps get Mike Green around 4M. smile
