MTL/EDM/BUF/NYI - Backstrom, Bura, Gru, Orpik, Conno gone

Created by: brady_t12
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 18, 2018
Published: Jun. 18, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There’s a rumor that MTL asked about Backstrom and Gallagher and the 3rd OA pick have been talked about in that potential deal. That opens up some cap space and adds a LOT of depth on the wings. So we can use some of that surplus depth to trade for other needs.

Hard no by the Caps. If we were going to blow it up, sure, but we still have a great team to keep going for the Cup. You aren't going for the Cup when you give up a top 10 center. This could work if Caps replaced Backy but they don't. Eller is good but he is not a 2C on a Cup contender.

What do you suggest is an acceptable return for what is offered?

Agreed. I just wanted to play with the rumor. The caps look better without getting rid of Backstrom unless they sign Tavares.

You'd be lucky to get a 4th from dumping orpik.

But the oilers are shopping and/or fielding offers for him... so I’d say there’s a good chance he’s gone.

Orpik isn’t a dump at this point.

He is to most teams besides Washington. There's not much point to dumping him anyways. Carlson will take a pay cut.

He is though, he's a 38 year old stay at home dman who is teetering on an edge of falling off a cliff.

If you tried to just give me Orpik and his salary for free, I'd say no thanks. No way I'm trading what is basically a 1st round pick for him and a scrub. Come on man

In 2015 Chiarelli picked up Connolly for 2 seconds and he had a better year this year than he had in 2015. Orpik was the best player in the 2015 play offs with a +17 rating over the entire series, I have read that Trotz had so little faith in Orpik's ability that he played Orpik the entire final 2 minutes of the last game while one of the fastest teams in the NHL had six attackers on the ice. Orpik has 2 championship rings and is an on ice leader, he has been given credit for making Carlson as good as he is, I would pick him up so he can do his magic for Dahlin and Ristolainen (maybe Brooks can teach both Rasmii how to clear the front of the net). I think I could make a decent argument that he is worth at least a 3rd on his own, but since Connolly was once traded for TWO seconds, I think it is safe to presume this the price asked for this package is already a bargain.

Calling Connolly a scrub is ignorant.

No. Just no. Eller as 2C and Stephenson as 3C likely moves the Caps out of Cup contention. That defensive group looks good, but won't make up for the poor forward group.
