Jets 2018-2019

Created by: TheCelt
Team: 2018-19 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2018
Published: Jun. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Any Vancouver or Philly fans feel free to make a counter-offer.

Philly trades one of the worst cost-benefit forwards for a high end middle 6 forward, for the cost of a late first round.

Vancouver trades a dude who really needs a change of scenery for another due who needs a change of scenery.

Buffalo trades a decent RHD prospect for a LHD prospect with bigger risk and higher ceiling.

Next year is going to be a "come to Jesus moment" for the Jets. Wheeler, Laine, Connor is a tuff pill to swallow in one year of signings. If Laine and Wheeler do as well or better and Connor improves, they could be looking at $25M in cap spent just on those 3. They should make one more hard run this year then it's going to be break up the band time.

I highly doubt that. In all likelihood, Connor gets bridged for the next two years while we wait for Buff to come off the books. In a worst, worst, case scenario, the Jets pay Connor, and Laine what they're worth and Wheeler walks. Vesalainen comes in and shows everyone how he managed to put up identical numbers to Laine in Liiga.

Wheeler's two-way game is definitely not overrated, but when you have 91 points and 46 of them come on the power play as a facilitator making a lo-hi read; between Statsny, Scheifele, Laine, and Byfuglien, the numbers are going to get skewed. I wouldn't be surprised if Little put up similar numbers playing on the right half-wall with a similar cast.

That's not going to happen. Trouba is a defensman that has eclipsed 30points once, and never play a full season. If a GM wants to pay a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd AND pay that defenseman 8.1mill, then point me at him so I can have a laugh. That's a lose-lose scenario for both GM's and a black mark on the GM that makes an offer sheet like that. One of the reasons Trouba is so attractive as an RFA for the Jets is because of his relative cheapness. RFA means the Jets are the only team with leverage to sign him for a cheap (relative to other 1RHD's) contract.

Okay, the Jets will not be in cap hell, but it's going to get tricky:

    Laine:
The best precedents for Laine's worth is Tarasenko and Eichel. Laine probably won't make more money than Eichel and he'll definitely make more than Tarasenko. I'm estimating him at 8.5-9.5mill/8years front-loaded as much as possible to increase the time value of his money. The X-factor on all of this is Mathews. If he somehow signs a team-friendly extension it gives us tons of leverage going into negotiations, and all of the following probably won't need to happen at all.

    Connor and Wheeler:
Connor is the tricky one, because his shooting percentage this season was a huge aberration from his AHL numbers. If I was betting money, I would say his sh% regresses and he ends up with 20-27 goals this season. I'd prefer to bridge him for two years @4.5-5.5mill, wait for Buff's contract to come off the books, and then raise him to a similar 8.5-9mill contract. That would give us enough cap to give Wheels a 1-1.5mill raise, and now we'll have successfully escaped cap hell, without it ever being a problem.

This relies on a couple things.
We need to cap dump Kulikov next year, and Copp likely won't be able to be resigned if he asks for anything more than a million. None of this should be a problem because Kulikov's contract for 1 year @4.3mill will be easy to dump, and you could kill two birds with one stone by trading away Copp's RFA rights to smooth Kulikov's cap dump with a team looking for a good 3rd line defensive forward. Tanev in one year will have likely progressed to the point that he is as good or better than Copp. Samberg will likely be developed enough to that point that we can sign him and play him, Morrow or any cheap UFA LHD, on the 3rd pairing and Niku steps up to 2nd pairing. Niku getting top 4 minutes as a sophomore won't be a problem considering Buff has the beautiful effect of raising his linemates' level a notch or two (see Morrow and Chiarot).

    The Worst-Case Scenario:
If Wheeler or Connor asks for too much money or refuses to be bridged. This is unlikely but still a possibility. If that is the case, then we need to let Wheeler walk, and secure Connor for long term. Vesalainen is almost as good as Laine was offensively in Liiga the year before he arrived, and is a better skater. By that logic, after a year as 3LW there's no reason to suspect he won't be ready for top 6 duty, and Vesa and Ehlers are both capable RWs. I'm not saying Wheeler's complete 2-way game is overrated, but more than half of his points came on the powerplay as a set up man for 3 of the best shooters in the NHL. His offensive game is absolutely overblown. Our team takes a hit if he leaves but Scheifele is our new captain, our top 6 is still intact, and we have escaped cap hell without spending more than one summer in it.

The X-X factor on all of the above is if Chevy can get one or two of those guys to sign long term team friendly contracts like Scheif and Ehlers. It's unlikely and I don't like to put my eggs in the sentimentality basket, but Chevy's done it before, and it's about as likely as Wheels or Connor getting greedy.

Love it I was thinking it may come to vaselainen replacing wheeler when they drafted him I was thinking it was wheelers replacement and same as morrisey for enstrom but losing wheeler may delay the Stanley cup parade a year or two but it’s coming fast I would love to see someone like a Tom Wilson or a James Neal type for top 6 and Brayden McNabb type for bottom pairing but hopefully Stanley and vaselainen fill those type of roles for me

I wouldn't mind that in theory on our bottom 6, but you can get good underrated sandpaper for cheap, and that sandpaper has to actually be effective and not appear effective. The point of being physical and getting to the dirty areas is to have possession of the puck in areas where it's 'easy' to score goals, like in front of the net, or to keep possession of the puck below the net and set up your teammates for easy goals in front of the net. So in stats, that's called high danger chances for and high danger chances against. You can weigh those two stats together and create a percentage score called HDCF% with a percentage over 50 meaning that the team gets a lot of chances from the tough areas when you're on the ice and a percentage below 50 means you give up high chances from the spot.

For example, Adam Lowry, leads the NHL in this stat with players that have played over 40 games with 64%. When people wonder why Adam Lowry is a 4th liner who will likely make 3million dollars this is why. (He also scores at the rate of a 2C relative to the ice time Maurice gives him.) He is the gold standard for effective physicality. He sets his teammates up in the tough areas, he gets chances in the tough areas, and he defends the tough areas incredibly well.

James Neal and Tom Wilson both had 46% and are examples of a guy whose bark is worse than his bite. If you give up more high danger chances than you get, but still claim to be a physical grinding player, then you need to reevaluate how you use your physicality. I don't want the Jets stapling guys to the wall if it means they're getting undisciplined in front of the net, or getting nasty at the expense of getting lazy in front of the crease or below the net. The appeal of Neal is that he is a sniper who can play physical rather than a grinder, but I'd still guess Neal is worth less than what he'll get paid this summer.

James Neal didn't beat the Jets. Marchessault, a lack of discipline in front of our net, and Vegas' discipline in front of their net did us in. But that's to be expected when you have the youngest team in the playoffs. Lesson learned, and I expect the Jets to do even better going forward.

Ya Neal is getting overpaid and over term this summer for sure nice to know on Lowry I just wish he was a little better skater but then he may price himself out of Winnipeg I just feel the reins may have been held a little to tight against for instance when Neal landed on helly I believe **** should have hit the fan and also they never seemed to get inside on fleury and a hot goalie like that I wish they would have made him worry him a little and knock him around a little or accidentally knock him down or lean on him a little like you said though youngest team learning through experience going to be interesting what laine brings to his game with this experience would be also nice to get a top end little a couple years removed from his nasty injury I’m looking forward to the development of roslovic and Connor last training camp they both seemed destined for a year with moose and both shown nice improvements

If it interests you, Jackie has an identical physical frame, AHL career, and NHL rates of production and percentages to Claude Giroux. Strong possibility Jackie turns out even better than Kyle Connor, but at a much more team-friendly price.
