That's not enough for Tavares, especially considering about 50% of that will go to our friend Justin Trudeau...

I still don't get why people think that someone is going to take the 2 x $2.5 left owed to Martin without the Leafs giving something up? I get that it's basically a straight swap of 4th rounders, but Martin offers zero surplus value. He's a guy that (if you have a good team) will sit in the press box for the vast majority of next season. He's great with the kids, but he has no business playing in the NHL anymore.

I disagree on Martin, I would not be surprised or disappointed if he plays 82 games for the Leafs this year. He's a serviceable 4th liner who hits like a freight train always. He doesn't have much offence and can't kill penalties but he can skate and brings energy. The reason he was benched last year was because Kapanen played too good and took his spot. Next year Komarov, Bozak and JVR are gone. Unless some of these young guys play insanely good in camp Martin will play a regular 4th line shift and it won't hurt the leafs.

The only thing I dread about Tavares not signing with the leafs is the 1118833736362782 doughty to the leafs teams that will start bombarding the site even more so than currently

Tavares is bit under market value here I agree but Toronto is in the position to offer him something else other teams cannot currently. NHL contract is only about 9 Mill but at the time of signing he would also sign 10+Mil in endorsement deals. While other teams could potentially offer similar structured deals the rumored lead deal is very unique and lucrative.

Lou was big on bringing Martin to Toronto and reported he would be interested in bringing him back to the Island. He is still very much a serviceable NHL player but didn't fit the leafs transition into a 100% skilled forward group
