Trying to make Karlsson work

Created by: Eli
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2018
Published: Jun. 20, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pros: enough extra offense to run a second power play unit all year.

Cons: defensively kinda weak. Won't play much with a one or two goal lead. Likely to demand a ridiculous 10M extension. Probably better off with guys who won't ask for that.

Not pro or con: can only afford 21 guys. Bowey ends up playing wing when guys are day to day. He used to get sixty points a year in junior, so it might do him some good to get his timing together and score some dirty goals at the NHL level.

Basically, Karlsson's cap hit costs Burakovsky and Wilson next year. His extension is fine when Orpik's current deal ends (Orpik is invited back at 2Mx1yr, but that quickly gets outbid, and Johansen moves up).

I think because of the Caps' cap situation, making an all-in trade on an injured superstar is a strongly questionable move, and it may lead to them losing Vrana and Connolly next summer, even with Orpik's departure. So it's pretty costly. Does this give them better odds at a Cup than trying to get a bunch of guys to re-sign at team-friendly prices? Maybe.... two power plays are better than one.

Out of goalies who played 30 games, Grubauer's 5th in spct, 8th in GAA. He's worth a first. Wilson just played on the top line all through the playoffs and won a Cup. He had a few points, he kept the puck in the zone so Ovechkin and Kuznetsov could get the most goals and most points in the playoffs. he also had the 7th most hits in a single playoff since anyone's been counting.

Karlsson was -25 this year due to a non-healing foot injury. No idea if he improves, but I'm pencilling him in as an overpriced offensive specialist. This is not a joke. I don't think he's the right fit with the Caps, and I feel I'm overpaying for what he adds to this particular team. I agree that Kempny is a cast-off due to salary math with Washington, but he played a top four role this year and won a Cup. His UFA rights are worth a little bit to a team whose call he might not take on July 1st. Chiasson is a checking line winger who can chip in a tiny bit of offense, and is inexpensive, and also just won a Cup.

Chicago could certainly put together similar offers around guys who have won Cups if they have any left who are better deals than Bobby Ryan. But I don't think they want to move Kane.

didn't hawks get 1st and a 4th for hartman who isn't much better than bura? how many goals did he score in the playoff? does he has a cup? did he assist on the gig for a stanley cup? no? so why is this funny or are you too dumb to realize that he does have value?

i do agree that karlson cost way more than this and the caps have jc who is close in talent no need for a 4th forward

the offer was low but i don't blame you bc in washington ek wouldn't be a top pairing guy i wouldn't play him over risk or jc when its 2-1 and the need to hold a win

Yes. This! All of this! EK is the best 4th fwd of the decade. Would make a little room for him, but don't actually need the liability on defense or the contract in nine years.

Definitely wouldn't do this. Karlsson is overrated and going to be massively overpaid. Team's better off paying Kempny and Wilson.

Thanks so much! I'd even let Kempny walk, keep Carlson, Wilson and Smith Pelly, trade Grubauer, and play Bowey 14 minutes a night. I can't deny Kempny was awesome. He was awesome. He made some incredible passes, landed more than one hit a game, and blocked almost two shots a game. Just phenomenal. I just think he was so awesome he'll get 3M a year, and I thought Carlson and Wilson were more awesome, and I think they have better chemistry with Ovechkin and co. Bowey's four years younger, might sign for a few years at less than 1M, has a higher offensive ceiling, hit as much in the regular season, and blocked about a shot a game, so within a year, with a bit of experience, he can contribute almost as much in next year's playoffs as Djoos did this year, while Djoos moves up to Kempny's minutes.
