Kovalchuk

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 21, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think they should try to find a trade partner or buyout Backes but they've already announced they don't plan on buying anyone out this season so I figured I wouldn't do something Sweeney has already said they don't plan on doing. They'll have cap space next year when Chara and mcquaid expire plus they can buy out backes next year if they still haven't found a trade partner so they'll have money to resign McAvoy, Carlo, Donato, Heinen, etc. If they can get Kovalchuk for around $6 mil for a couple of years, I think that would be a good investment because if he can still score at a similar pace to his KHL totals we will have much better depth and it'll make the offense harder to stop. The Bruins should focus on keeping the 1st line together because nobody could contain them this past season and why would you mess with their chemistry by moving Pasta to Krejci's wing?

Kovalchuk scares me, I don't mind experimenting, but for 6 mil a year I think it is too risky for an aging player. That being said I understand you picked 6 mil a year because that is probably what he will get. But I think the Bruins should look elsewhere.

I agree. Kovalchuk is heading into his late 30s so anything more than 1-2 years is worrisome. He still has talent and his KHL numbers are great but the team he played on is so stacked lol.

Bruins also have to try to see if Backes/Krejci can be shopped around after this season as McAvoy, DeBrusk and company might get costly.

I like your reasoning about keeping the 1st line together, and I completely agree. But the Bruins would get very little cap relief by buying out Backes contract. His contract was structured in such a way as to intentionally prevent the Bruins from buying it out in later years.
