But seriously, it works for both sides. Colorado takes advantage of the cap space and gets Grubauer, their future in net. Orpik should be bought out or traded again too. Caps get cap space for Carlson and a pick to bring in another solid prospect.

Both teams achieve their goals here. Caps move Grubi, get cap space, and pick up an asset, while Avs add two cup rings, a very competent goaltender, and Orpik's gritty leadership into their young locker room. Fair deal.

They add 3 cup rings. Orpik has 2, Grubauer has 1.

Fair. It makes sense for both sides, so far, the most even deal of the offseason.

This is only a fair deal if the Caps can use Orpik's cap space to resign Carlson. If Carlson walks, then the Avs get a veteran gritty Defender and their future Goalie for the #47 pick.

Varlamov trade incoming?

I think that they won't sign Bernier and Keep Varlamov for another year until his contract is up.

I told people Grubauer wasn't getting a first round pick. A 2nd round pick? yes but a first round pick - no.

The Isles could have offered more for Grubauer. I guess the thing is, Washington does get rid of Orpik's contract. He's a decent d-man though. I'm not sure if they got enough for Grubauer.

Grubauer alone could’ve gotten a first. If you told me we were packaging him with Orpik, a second sounds right. We needed to clear cap space for Carlson, that was a widely known fact. Hence the trade for a lesser pick involving Orpik, so we can bring Carlson back and still get something for Grub.

Edge to Washington as they are good in goal. Grubauer too good to be a #2. Washington taking advantage of there depth here. Orpik is simply a salary dump so now they can retain #1 Carlson. The second rounder likely top 6 F, top 4 D over time or likely the #1 goalie in 2019 draft. Wish, Grubauer ended up in Buffalo but our 1st second rounder would have been too high a price to pay.

Does anyone KNOW if Orpik is allowed to sign with Washington after his buyout? I know a player cant sign with his buyout team, but is there a time stipulation for resigning with a previous team? Like "a player who is bought out cannot sign with a team in which he has played for within one calendar year" or something along those lines. I really don't want to go read the CBA for this.

If not then this could be great for Washington to sign him to a very team friendly deal with bonuses if he was interested. They could potentially come back with the same defense next year.

I believe he can sign with the Capitals.

If a GM was prepared to give up a first round pick than they would have last Friday..

Oh, and I suppose you know this to be true because...why exactly? The Caps obviously needed the space to bring back Carlson. Grubauer was their best trade chip so a package deal like this is exactly what we were looking for. If you don’t think that’s true, that’s fine, be wrong.

Eh, I think it was still decent for both sides. Grubauer wasn't going to be in DC for much longer anyway since the Caps at the time were incredibly high on Samsonov and were looking to bring him up asap. This is one of the moves that also allows VV to start further down the line. Clark is a decent prospect and bringing back Orpik as a leadership guy for far less was helpful for the younger players. And as for Colorado, they got a great goalie for a couple years and all it cost was a 2nd round pick. I think it would look worse for Washington if Grubauer had resigned but now that he's left for Seattle it looks better for DC.
