  1. 2019 3rd round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. Brouwer, Troy ($750,000 retained)
  2. Lazar, Curtis
Additional Details:
Brouwer is from VAN. Benning could be looking to add some veteran roster presence after losing both Sedins. Plenty of cap space to work with.

VAN gets two roster players; Lazar bringing some upside potential (worth a 4th rounder on his own). Brouwer contract is buyout-able after this season.

CGY
  1. Smith, Zack
  2. 2019 7th round pick (CGY)

Appreciate the research on the new guys.

Going to be very interesting for us cap-wise if they sign close to these numbers...

CapFriendly has a really good "Comparables" tool, which is where I pulled these comps. And Matt Cane has been within a low margin of error on his AAV projections. So, you can be pretty sure that these contract dollar amounts are going to be close.

Treliving is very, very good at getting players to sign fair or better-than-fair contracts in CGY. Matching $5M contracts would be just fine for CGY long-term. Treliving has plenty of room to work with. Could trade Stone for a pick(s) straight up instead of taking back $3.25M of Smith, for example.

Strongly against trading for another 3+ million contract for the 4th line. Stone can be moved for a pick somewhere or a bottom 6 winger who is making 1.5 millionor less.

Just thinking out loud with that one. Flames were rumored to be interested in Smith in the past; Senators are rumored to be interested in Stone right now to help sign his brother Mark. OTT remains cap-conscious, so moving similar-sized contracts might be how something like this gets done.

That said, I'm firmly in agreement with you -- I'd much prefer to move Stone for a 3rd round pick (maybe more?) and keep the cap savings. CGY has plenty of players to compete for a 4th line role.

With the potential rebuild coming to Ottawa they can afford the cap hit in order to convince Mark to stay there.
