Not only that. The pick we got was the # 1 pick in the 6th round
The pick Buffalo will get next year ( The Leafs 6th rounder ) will be closer to the end of the 6th round
Assuming the Leafs are good again next year

This trade made no sense to me. Someone owe someone a favor?

I can only assume that the Leafs thought some other team was going to "steal" Pontus Holmberg ahead of the Leafs. Let's have this discussion in 10 years and see how it all works out.
Or it just looks like a GM wanting to get some TV time and look smarter making trades.

Sure, but why would Buffalo agree to it? They gave up pick #156 THIS YEAR for probably pick #170-186 NEXT YEAR. Usually a team like the Leafs would have to pay MORE to move up a year (like next year's 5th, for example). Instead the Sabres allowed themselves to have to wait a year for a pick that is guaranteed to NOT be better than what they gave. The only reason that it could make even a little bit of sense is if they believe the draft is going to be deeper next year in the later rounds, but I'm not sure how you can bet on that at this point.

Didn't the Sabres also get the Leafs 6th in 2018, so its 180th and 180th for a 156.

Buffalo probably wasn't ready to make a pick and wasn't interested with anyone on the board.

this. hope something comes around next year. I mean, major junior teams just don't pick at all (just look at the import drafts) when they don't have anyone on their list, so why not get a pick for next year?

I'd like to hear what Botteril would say if asked
