It's definitely better than losing him, but I think there's a very good chance that he never comes close to repeating his production numbers from this season.

I don't want to **** on the guy, and he definitely earned this contract this season and in the playoffs, but I think this contract is going to sting. Looking at his career as a whole, he's a lot closer to a 30-40 point guy than a 60 point guy. even if I'm wrong, and he is able to repeat his success this season, the back half of that contract is going to hurt.

We'll come to the back half of his contract when we have to but for right now its necessary for us to repeat and in two years we'll be talking about guys like Doughty and Karlsson getting 10 million + on their new contracts

The last half of contract wont be great. But he was getting eight years no matter where he went. If you're Washington, you gotta do whatever it takes to keep him - especially if you want a chance at a couple more cup runs before Ovechkin starts to slow down.

He could only get 8 in Washington, it would be 7 anywhere else as max.

50-60 points is more likely. He's been around 0.7 p/g in 3 of the last 4 seasons. Burns was at that level 3 years ago, and has produced more since then, age he turned 30. Carlson could just as easily follow suit.

He sure as hell earned this payday this season. I’m worried that he’ll regress to being the $6M defenseman he was before this season, but I’m feeling that he can be a true #1 defenseman for around 5 or 6 years of this deal. Even if this is a career year for him (which I’d expect it is), I’d rather have my #1 defenseman locked up long term.

We now have at least two years of control for all of Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Oshie, Eller, Vrana, Wilson, Burakovsky, Orlov, Carlson, Niskanen, Djoos and Holtby. The core is intact and it’s clear we are going to try and win while we have the guys to do so. Whatever cap issues will come later, they clearly play second fiddle to winning in our window.

Everyone saying the back half of the contract is going to suck but doesn't the salary cap increase every year. maybe in 8 years the 8 million will be more akin to the brooks orpik contract that was 5 million. meaning the 8 mill will only be as burdensome as the 5 mill orpik was getting.

This isn't surprising. They traded Orpik just to open up more cap for Carlson.

When you look at what Carlson did last season, then you say that he deserves such contract. But when you look at his entire career, this is an obvious overpayment and even worse in terms of the length of his contract.

So, to me Washington gambled here betting that he'll at least keep his production for many years. If they're right, then I'll change my mind about it. But, for now, that's a great contract for Carlson and at least a risky one from Washington's perspective.

PS: I understand this overpayment by Capitals. Ovechkin already is a 32 guy and his prime won't last many years. So, they must to all in now to try to win at least one more cup.

this is how UFA contracts work. you pay for the good years and accept you will pay them for bad years down the road. that is why the Shattenkirk signing by the Rangers was such an exception (age 28-32 instead of 28-34/35).

which of these contracts are going to look good in the last 2 years?
- Toews
- Kane
- Kopitar
- Burns
- E. Kane (I've argued this back then too)
- [...]

just look at the past season and look at what was talked about Nash. he was in a similar situation (last 2 years of contract that got him through his late prime).that's the risk you take by (re-)signing UFAs.

UFA's are risky and are barely worth it. The 3 seasons before this season he had: 55 points, 39 points, and 37 points so those don't look like 8x8 contracts numbers. Some of comparables are also overpayed but anyhow the Caps contract situation will be bad once Ovi needs to be re-signed. Oshie, Carlson and maybe Kuznetsov will all be overpayed for too long. His contract doesn't look to moveable as well with those NTC's either but maybe he'll prove me wrong but I doubt it.

The contracts that the Caps have given Oshie and Carlson the last two years make it very clear what their window is. They're looking to go all in for the next five years or so while they still have Ovi and Backy. After these contracts to Osh, Carlson, Orlov, and Kuzy, I fully expect that Backy and Ovi will resign in Washington at the end of their upcoming contracts. Not that that is overly surprising. Now that they have a cup they have no reason to go cup chasing. Caps should have a very strong corps moving forward for the next 5-6 years now and if they get another cup in that period then I think most Caps fans will be happy to be overpaying Carlson and Oshie the last two years on their deal

It's definitely better than losing him, but I think there's a very good chance that he never comes close to repeating his production numbers from this season.

Now it's aged exponentially worse... not only did he repeat it, but he improved on his point total 2 years in a row
