If Tavares is signed Nylander or Marner needs to be traded for a D right?

I guess it can be done but it's tight. Also who is this mythical defenseman that Nylander or Marner is traded for? Your guess is as good as mine

Thoughts on potentials:

Faulk (Carolina) - likely available with Hamilton brought in to be op qb but frankly not really what Leafs need
Dumba. I like him and all but I don't think he is a 1d
Trouba. He already is rumoured to be trying to get out of WPG to go to the states. Why would he sign with term with another Canadian team?
Hamilton. Already traded.

Provorov/werensky/similar young studs. Not being moved.

Tallon is often surprising so I guess ekblad could be moved but otherwise no idea...

Just keep Nylander and package Kapanen/Brown with Rosen/Borgman and give a bunch of picks.

Go for Parayko from STL, fits in the age group of the team, and has #1D potential.

Nylander for Parayko

He also has a digestible contract ($5.5mil)

One of the purposes of trading Nylander would be to create cap space. You have created a roster of 20 with less than 3m million in cap space, so having this mystical 7m may not be possible. Just might to spend on lesser Dman, or hope Rosen/Borgman are NHL Dmen.

@palhal the purpose of trading Nylander or Marner isn't saving cap space it's moving cap space from forward to defense as with Matthews, Tavares and one of Nylander/Marner enough of the cap allocation is on forwards....

Why does it matter if the cap is on forwards or D ? Either way you're above the cap...

Faulk had a bad year last year, but I could see a deal based around him, Gauthier, and other prospects and picks if the Leafs were willing to listen.
