AAV is just a tad high, but complely worth it considering how well he meshed on every line he was thrown on. Looking forward to watching him for these next 4 years

Not bad. He's good defensively and has a knack for big goals in the playoffs.

Seems high to me considering he normally plays around 2/3rd of an NHL season......although I guess that's the benefit of having Crosby and Malkin at below-market deals.

Rust slots in to any line however this is a little high in my opinion. Comparables: Silverberg, Pearson, Desharnais, Lee and Eakins.

overpaying by about a million, although its longer term so maybe that drives the AAV up some but not by that much.

Just 500k and 1 year above what I thought it'd be. But as a Pens fan, I'm pretty happy with this contract, cause Rust is pretty important to us in both sides of the ice.

I agree, but if he nets 50 points next season, the contract will look good

and if he either regresses or just doesn't continue to improve it might be the new "sheary contract" where everyone is trying to get rid of him

Not everyone here thinks we should get rid of Sheary. I wouldn't be interested in giving him away simply to clear cap space. He had 27 even strength points. The only contract I'd really look to move is hunwick. Having said that, Rutherford does seem to overpay by about 500k per year in contracts(Sheary, Rust, Schultz, Hornqvist, Dumo) and that cap space does add up. When you add in a bad signing (hunwick), you get 4.75 million that could have been used on getting the extra defense/goal scoring Rutherford is looking for.

I don't think we should get rid of him for nothing but in return for something decent, even hunwick I wouldn't give away for absolutely nothing(can at least get a late round pick for him, ok that's basically nothing).
Yeah that is the problem, when you have one guy overpaid you either have to underpay another guy or else it just adds up for each guy you overpay, sheary and rust combined now make 6.5m per year, if you save 1.5m there that should be almost enough to fully pay Sheahan. By overpaying just two guys they almost lose the ability to sign one player. Add in hunwicks contract and that is a sizeable amount of money wasted on just 3 guys.

I like it, Rust is a good solid depth scorer who can really produce when you need him to.

3.5 is alittle high for a career high of 38 pts. People need to stop paying players up front for what they think theyll be able to live up to. Need to start giving out money if theyve earned, rust hasnt earned this salary yet.
