Leafs Revisited 18/19

Created by: Doug7004
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 26, 2018
Published: Jun. 27, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes I realize I have moved Kadri to the wing. . . .always the position I thought he should play!
Yes I realize that in all likelihood there should be app. $19M available to pay Matthews, Marner, and Kapanen in 19/20, which likely means an additional move would have to be made! (Est. $22-$23M)
And yes Bozak decides Toronto is his home and takes the hit!

I like all of this, apart from the Bozak signing. He's a good foot soldier but he is just too slow and his defensive play is way too lacking. He only looks good in the faceoff dot, pp and when playing against 3rd or 4th liners. If he gets trapped out against 2nd or 1st liners, he gets destroyed.

You are somewhat contradictory! I do believe that Bozak is a prototypical 3rd line center who can play up or down the lineup! He will play the bulk of his minutes against the 3rd and 4th lines! He will contribute to the 2nd PP. He will take crucial defensive Zone face offs and if signed for the above, comes as a bargain! Playing with defensively responsible KAPPY and Johnson, who's speed can make up for a lot should also help!

I think Bozak cashes out on the FA market. He could double his money and term elsewhere as teams get desperate following JT and Stastny.

Your trade with VAN is nowhere close to being accepted from the Nucks.

You certainly could be right on Bozak, but hearing he's really interested in staying in Toronto so we'll see if money talks. I do disagree with you on Tanev, as his long time injury history plays into their return for the player! Don't think they get a better offer although they have never really wanted to deal with Toronto!

1) He can't play higher up in the lineup due to his limited skating
2) Yes on everything else though
3) Kadri is just better at centre and if you have Tavares you just don't need Bozak.

That's assuming you leave Kadri at center. I believe he can be a stronger winger than he is a center! Kadri doesn't drive a line 5 on 5! Even last year it wasn't until Marner was moved to his line that actually he took off. I think he Marner and Matthews would be tremendous! Kadri while tenacious in the offensive zone is NOT a strong defensive Zone coverage type of center.

The single greatest strength Toronto has is its depth, they can roll 4 lines that can create massive matchup issues. Having Kadri play at Centre, where he has scored 30 goals the past two seasons, give TO the best depth possible. He's just all around better than Bozak and with the depth at wing, it makes little sense to bring back Bozak who is a diminishing asset. Kadri is a center and a damn good one, he isn't elite but if he goes from playing against the opposing teams best players to playing against 3rd and 4th liners, he'll crush em!

Tavares will get a lot of tough assignments as will Matthews, keeping Kardri at centre gives the Leafs 3 lines that can keep up with almost any line in the game. Its a strength that only the Penguins and the Lightning can also boast.

Good debate. . . . But we'll agree to disagree!

Might have to go an extra year or two for Bozak to sign at that number...but I could see it happening and wouldn't be opposed to it if it did.
