Although Sheary scored 18 goals last year, he was invisible for most of the second half of the year and the playoffs. Hunwick never fit in and eventually lost his place to Chad Ruhwedel. Both players could play better in Buffalo, but both are question marks. And the Pens get over $5 mil in cap space to hopefully not sign Jack Johnson

whats the condition part of it? sheary is worth a third so that alone makes the sabres "win" the deal if its a fourth.

Pittsburgh clears some much needed cap room, but if Sheary bounces back this season, Buffalo wins.

Also sounds like the plan is to make a run at a trade for Jeff Skinner while trying to get FA Jack Johnson and/or Chris Kunitz.

Idk how people are voting that BUF won, they acquired average players + $5+mill in cap space that they no longer can spend in free agency, while PIT now has space to most likely go after James Neal or other UFAs... the draft pick really doesn’t matter in this situation.

If anything it’s a fair deal I guess

This is a fair trade for both the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For the Buffalo Sabres, they need members who can score goals and play defense. Conor Sheary scores goals. Matt Hunwick plays defense. Sheary and Hunwick are instant upgrades for the Sabres. The Sabres have lacked point production and defensemen who clear the puck out of the defense zone.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins, they need to create cap space and reload with better players in the system. Sheary became expendable with the re-signing of Bryan Rust and the promotion of Daniel Sprong for the 2018-2019 season. Hunwick did not play much for the Penguins, and he took up cap space. The Penguins have cap space to acquire team members and a draft pick to begin restocking the farm.

Safe to say that the Pens want to make room for free agents. I could see them signing a JVR or a Bozak and putting him with Kessel on the same line.

Also, wasn’t Sheary a linemate if Crosby’s for the past couple years? They could’ve traded Rust and could’ve saved a couple dollars too.

I guess Hunwick will play 7th D in Buffalo. Once Buffalo signs Reinhart and a goalie, they should have just under 10M to sign more free agents. I think this might be the year that Buffalo gears up for the playoffs.

Well they got $5,000,000 in cap space, but they didn't get much for Sheary. Hunwick, I didn't expect to get much for but Sheary maybe a bit more.

Sure this is good for the Penguins because they clear up $5.25M in cap space. But they are also giving up a good player in Sheary on a completely reasonable contract. Hunwick is probably slightly overpaid but its not like its an awful contract. All they get is a 3rd rounder at best.

Meanwhile Buffalo gets a middle 6 forward and a bottom pairing D for $5.25M combined. While they still have $18+M in cap space to go after free agents.

I just don't see how anyone could vote Penguins for who won this trade.

Fair trade for both teams IMO. Interested to see how Sheary does in Buffalo.

If Hunwick gets traded or if Sheary has 40 points/20 goals. Source: https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1012022219457880065

Pit wins just by clearing $5m in cap to sign something better than Sheary+Hunwick.

Buffalo just paid for Ennis 2.0 and a replacement level LD.

I tend to give the slight edge to PIT on this one. Shedding $5M in cap will allow PIT to have $10M and go after an impact UFA. With that said. BUF isn't exactly stacked @ LW and Sheary can still be a complimentary piece next to a ROR or Eichel. 83 points over the last 2 years is still 83 points. BUF can also easily afford that cap hit. overall win/win...slight edge to PIT.

With that said...let's all go back to see what PIT fans though Sheary was going to get on his own!!! smile

You do realize that part of the reason they had to give up Sheary was because Hunwick is so bad that nobody would take his contract without big compensation?

Ok, for both teams. For Sabres you can see these guys are place holders as the young guns develop in the AHL. In two years the contracts are up and maybe we'll see "bust for now" Nylander and the insane amount of D prospects we now have replace them. I think it allows success in AHL and even improves the Sabres a little. We gave up next to nothing to get them. Pittsburgh wins because they offload middle of the road players on high for there value contracts. They can get a good UFA for 5mil if they want or sign RFA.

BOTs did good on this one. I'd think maybe either of the newly acquired players may be worth a 3 to 4th rounder down the road at trade deadline time if need be

Pens get cap space as well as a pick. Sabres add a solid third line winger in Sheary but also an overpaid trash LHD in Hunwick.

I think this benefits the Penguins more than it does the Sabres.

Exactly. Overpaid at 3 million but I hope he does well in Buffalo.
