Agreed and even if he goes to the AHL...that's where JFB is projected anyway. CHI also wants to give more responsibility to Delia and give Lankinen ice time too.

And some folks said this summer wouldn't be exciting because of the lack of trades.

CHI has way too many goalies, and CBJ desperately needs to give Matiss Kivlenieks a break down in the AHL. These small moves could make a world of difference!

Yes, I’m sure Kekalainen was thinking ahead 3 or 4 years to a time when they might need him to come in and rescue them. Clearly a stroke of genius!

The best part is that Berube didn't stay with CBJ all this time. He bounced around and returned as a UFA this year. If he stayed in the CBJ system the entire time, then you could say it was a stroke of genius for Kekalainen. Alas, it wasn't.

I know. I was trying to be sarcastic. I was also going to say he was planning for the possibility that he might lose a young goalie in a tragic fireworks accident but I thought that would be in bad taste, and as you pointed out, they actually lost Bérubé to free agency in 2019 and didn’t bring him back until after Kivlenieks was killed.

I suppose the trade with Chicago let them take a look at him in their system for a year, which may have given them a better idea of what they’d be getting when they brought him back for this season, but it seems more like just a twist of fate that he’s their #1 starter now.
