question if arizona would give on the potential of strome for Hyman. traded three men for got one in return, is there enough depth in cases of injuries? cross fingers on the nhl ability of bowman and ozhiganov. but if those questions are answered in favour of the leafs, like the team you assembled.

Take out Gardiner in the Tanev deal and just leave his salary at full.

NYI aren't going to be happy with us taking JT so I don't see us trading with them... lol

Arizona says not a chance and never call here again. Plus I'd rather go Dvorak then Strome anyway.

I like all the contracts except Grabner. He is definitely not needed. We will have plenty of speed and our PK was good last year despite having Polak on it. I'd rather up it to 5-6 mill and get Neal.

I agree about Dvorak over Strome. Also consider the fact that Dvorak and Marner played together in London (OHL) and had some serious chemistry. I am sure that fact has not gone unnoticed. If, somehow, the Leafs managed to sign Tavares, their top 3 center spots are locks, at least for the time being, so their 4C would need to have specific grinding and PK skills. I would consider both Strome and Dvorak top-6, at least potential, and neither would really fit a bottom-6 role like that. It would make more sense to look to acquire Perlini, for the wing, or even McInnis, as a bottom-6 and 4C option.

Take out Carrack instead of Gardiner and keep the salary retention in there. Maybe have to upgrade to a 1st rounder and Gardiner for Tanev at half salary. (It makes fitting a servicable defence much easier next season) Carrack is an NHL worthy defenceman, keep him and let him play more.

Arizona isn't taking Hyman and Rosen for either of Dvorak or Strome (Strome is totally a bust by the way, can't skate) and beyond that, the Leafs shouldn't even be thinking of a trade like that. Hyman will anchor the Leafs penalty kill and he also adds value in other areas that the Leafs lack. (Sand paper, heart, toughness) I'm not saying you need to have a lot of toughness, but having a guy that can play tough in the playoffs and get under peoples skin is valuable.

Finally signing a Neal is a huge mistake, it'll cost a lot of money and he just isn't needed. The Leafs, if they get Tavares will completely dominate the centre of the ice, spending big dollars on wingers who are marginal upgrades on the players we have is a waste of money.

Why are we trading a MUCH better player In Gardiner for an injury prone middle pair guy in Tanev? Especially adding a pick. I want the pick coming back.

Because Gardiner isn't the right fit for this club. He's going to cost too much next season and I'd take Nylander over Gardiner 10 out of 1 times and we won't be able to keep both next season. So trade him for maximum value because we have a surplus of LHD and we need cap room for next season.

My point in the question is why are we trading the MUCH BETTER Dman in Gardiner for an injury prone top 4 D at best and having to give a pick also? If I'm doing that then I want

Gardiner
For
Tanev (50% retained)
Conditional 1st (if Tanev plays 75+ games or Leafs make SCF it turns to 2nd)

2 things,

1) You are greatly over valuing Gardiner, he isn't better than Tanev he scores less but is extremely better defensively and also would greatly enhance the PK. He'd also make Reilly one of the best defenceman in the league.

2) To get the Canucks to retain salary its going to cost assets.

Gardiner is VERY underrated in his own end too. So yes Gardiner is much better. Only reason why Leafs are moving him is he only has 1 year deal now and with the forwards we can't pay him. Also he's not RHD. Lol

Gardiner is a massive asset. So there you go.

I am a Leafs fan and this is what Gardiner is.

A high risk high reward player. He has elite puck moving abilities and often can make something work out of nothing. However, he also is extremely soft along the boards and doesn't box out well in front. Two extremely important parts of being a defenceman in this league. Because of those two issues and the rise of Dermott, I would trade Gardiner for something else that will improve the team in areas they need improvement. Or just send him for picks to replenish the cupboards and make sure this team always has young guys ready to jump into the lineup.

Gardiner is a 2nd pairing left shot defenceman, that's it nothing more and nothing less. But when the team has Dermott who is going to be an excellent 2nd pairing LHD, Hainsey who is a better 3rd pairing LHD why not move Gardiner for some assets that'll help in other areas?

You don't need to box out players when you always have the puck. But it's also not just making something out of nothing he's VERY underrated on his defensive game. Its very difficult to gain zone entry against him and he's elite at moving the puck down the ice. Hainsey will be on the right side for as long as he's in Toronto. Leafs depth at LHD is too strong. Dermott isn't ready yet for top 4 minutes so instead of throwing him into the pool to see if he can swim have Gardiner around till Dermott is ready. Leafs don't need draft picks cause we have all our picks and then some plus we still have NHL ready prospects ready to come up. If need be just let Gards walk cause Leafs probably don't get fair value for him anyways.
