The cap hit is not terrible. Really, it's not. Johnson is a servicable guy.

But 5 years? You're on drugs.

After clearing like 5m in cap space you'd think they'd spend it on younger guys given their aging core... And 5 years too wow

I thought for sure he was going to get a 1 year deal to prove he was still a top 4 guy. More surprised at the term than the amount, but $3M is manageable.
Saw speculation of up to $6M. Knew there was no way that was happening. Whether this is a steal or dud, time will tell.

I know, I'm a Pens fan but he'll play bottom pair with Oleksiak or something like that.

I have a feeling you'll see him in the top 4 on at least a trial basis. They likely promised him at least a shot there. Knowing how unhappy he was with his reduced role in Columbus, I can't see him choosing to sign with someone who wasn't offering that chance.

Yeah, they'll do that or have Maatta most likely play bottom the role but the Pens can fix defensemen like him so who knows. Hey, at least Barginbin isn't doing something stupid.

Rutherford wants us to roll 3 d pairs more evenly this season so he may not be getting placed in the top 4. Also, Johnson and Schultz would likely be a dumpster fire together. Neither one of them defends particularly well. They could try him at RD with Maatta, but that wouldn't make much sense either. So the most logical spot for him would be the 3rd pairing with Oleksiak. I'm not sold on him magically becoming better here, but he should at least see easier match-ups and less d-zone starts. He may even be able to help our transition game. He does pretty well with possession entries and exits and he was way above average each of the past two years with his transition passing. However, I would have preferred a 1 year prove it deal.

It appears many, including myself, have concerns about the Pittsburgh Penguins signing Jack Johnson. I will be optimistic that Johnson can rediscover himself and his game with the Penguins with better coaching, better teammates, and a better system that will allow him to produce, succeed, and win.

The Penguins needed a defensemen. Johnson was among the better defensemen available. Jim Rutherford and the Penguins know what they are doing.

Who wants to play for losers like Bergevin? No one.

Who wants to play and win? Jack Johnson.

If Pittsburgh wins the cup, it will have very little to do with JJ but ok

I'd like the cap hit. It's pretty fair. But 5 years??? Why JR??? 2 or 3 years at most would be a very good sign. But 5...as a Pens fan, there's no way to like the terms. I'm sure we'll regret in 3 years at most.

I hope he can be effective for us for at least the next 3 years...
