Yes he is, but 7 years!!!!!!! I was the biggest McD supporter in his prime, but MAN has he lost a couple of steps. No longer carries the puck or able to shut down stars, like he used to do to Ovie... Not bad deal for a couple of years. I guess if there's no ntc they could find a desperate team in few years that would take him.

Oh ya, I know. But he doesn't have to play top-2 minutes in Tampa. It's like Phaneuf in Toronto. He was a good player playing great player's minutes here. Now that he's been in teams with great dmen(both ott and lak), he's much more effective. I can totally see same happening with Hedy and McD.

Why... Just why... Would rather have Stralman at 1.5M-2M less.. JT Miller and McDonagh are going to be contracts we regret.

After thinking about this contract more and more, I've realized how much this is going to hurt them.

This means for sure that Stralman is walking, which will leave the right side of the defense very weak. Cal Foote is coming up, but he's the only notable guy to play on the right that they have. Dotchin can play with Hedman, but I don't think that's ideal. Plus, Sergachev can easily take a top four role long term. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he develops into the second #1 defenseman on that team. He looked so good in the playoffs to me that I would have increased his role more against Washington.

Like Bolts said, they could have had Stralman for cheaper to stabilize the right side more, for less money. It also would give Sergachev more of a role to grow into and develop into the top flight defenseman that he can be. Yzerman has proven that he rarely makes mistakes, but this one is a head scratcher for sure.

We see this often. A GM trades and gives up a lot for a player whose contract is expiring soon. Then he GM extends the player, seemingly to justify the trade in the first place.
Can't think of any team that would offered so much. $$$ or term for McDonagh in July 2019 if had became a UFA. It's almost like Yzerman paid " a hometown premium"
