Because JT wanted to return home

Because JT chose TOR over NYI

Because JT took less to be home

Because JT fulfilled his childhood dream

Because JT wont go anywhere with NYI

Because JT can get somewhere with TOR

    Your Welcome!

Another guy that doesn't understand free agency? Gee, did you apologize to the Jets for signing Ladd or the other UFAs the Isles/Rangers have made over the years. Actually the Leafs did very little in the whole process. It is the player, in this case John Tavares, that makes the decision not any of the teams involved

It's not what he did, it's how he did it. Read back the past two years and you'll find quote after quote about how much Tavares wanted to stay an Islander. You'll see his "love" for the team, it's fanbase and how he wants nothing more than to be the captain for us and be the first to lift the cup here. Tavares asked to not be traded at the deadline. He "wanted" to work things out.

Then, he ran the clock out on us. If Snow/Weight were still in charge I was completely expecting him to leave. But the way John handled this situation and treated the team he supposedly never wanted to leave was unprofessional. He didn't lose my respect and admiration by the fact alone that he left. It's how he did it.

Not sure if you saw the press conference, but I genuinely believe JT toiled over Toronto vs NYI...you could tell he was happy but a bit tormented at the same time. I wonder if there was ever any conversation between Toronto and NY about a rights trade to get him an 8th year on the deal...that's what I personally thought the big wait was for...but sounds like he just stewed on it for so long that it left the Islanders with no chance.

Realistically tho...I can't imagine, at that time, the Leafs would have given up a whole lot for the rights.

You should have seen the news conference today. Unless Tavares is the greatest actor in the world, you know he has big regrets leaving the Isles. For the reasons you gave he wanted to stay. Is Ferrero the TV guy, the NHLer acknowledges that Long Island might be the best place to live for any of the NHL players.
I guess we will never know what the the deciding factor in JTs decision. But from what I have heard/read, it could be of JTs family based in Toronto. Maybe it really wasn't any hockey factor that swayed him.,

JT said the timing lined up in such a rare manner that he didn't want to let the discomfort of leaving the only team he knew get in the way.

His free agency happened to line up at a time when the team he grew up idolizing is a cup contender and has the willingness and resources to sign him.

It's made me think back on all the years where Toronto fans thought the big hometown star would sign here and save the franchise...but it makes sense....what star wants to waste prime years by joining a losing team? The Leafs finally managed to build a competitive team and, without that, I doubt JT would have considered them much at all

He still handled it poorly. If Toronto was on his mind (he knew they'd pursue him in FA) then don't ask not to be traded. We acquiesced to his every request and he stiffed us on the way out. I've already bought my tickets for the game in Brooklyn and Nassau Coliseum. I am ready to boo the hell out of him. The guy is dead to me.

Again, not that he left. But the matter in which he did it.

All I can say to that is...as a professional athlete, he earned the right to make his decision whichever way he pleased.

And as a paying Islander fan...you're totally entitled to boo the crap out of him

For all his talk of loyalty and professionalism he sure handled it in probably the worst way possible. Drag it out to the very last minute and spurn us. Just not right lol.

And yeah, I expect to lose my voice but whatever

He was good friends with Garth Snow. Maybe them firing him changed quite a bit ... i'm not sure if that's right, just saying it could be.
