St. Louis wins this easily. They get a top-3 two-way center in the league for Thompson and two picks AND unload TWO terrible contracts while they're at it.

Amazing trade for STL ! They do that and their prospect pool is still insanely good. Thought Buffalo was asking for more... But this is a fair trade nonetheless.

Buffalo gets a hefty haul, but I think the first and second are more like tokens of gratitude for taking on Sobotkas and Berglunds iffy contracts. Blues get a guy who albeit overpaid wins faceoffs and backchecks, great player. I still think that Buffalo wins though, because of the inclusion of Thompson.

St. Louis’s center depth is pretty nasty now.

Good for both teams. Blues get a great center and Buffalo get a decent haul of picks and players.

Blues win it. Thompson is a great piece, and the picks are nice. That alone seems like a fair deal. When you factor in the fact that the Blues SAVED money, it’s a win for Armstrong & co.

No Thomas, no Kyrou, no Fabbri, no Kostin, no Parayko, no Barbashev. Huge win for STL.

Thompson was the guy STL was most willing to part with. they gave the standard 1st and 2nd that was expected. and they got cap relief.

Actually pretty proud of the Blues moves today. I knew when they signed Perron that they had plans to unload some salary (Berglund or Sobotka) but I never imagined they would be able to send both packing. Tage and the two draft picks will definitely help Buffalo during their rebuilding process. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Bergie or Sobie flipped for additional picks from another team.

Glad Armstrong was able to keep the main prospect pool from being touched. Tage has a ridiculous slap shot but only had a small sample size this last year. I hope he has a productive career in the NHL. Very happy with the Blues today.

The Buffalo Sabres are going to miss Ryan O'Reilly's point production. They will need to address O'Reilly's void and point production necessity through another trade or a good free agent signing.

The assets I see for the Sabres are Patrick Berglund, Tate Thompson, and the draft picks. Vladimir Sobotka is a hard sell.

Fair Trade. Blues get their center and not one of the top 3 prospects, Buffalo get enough depth and a good prospect in Thompson plus a 1st and 2nd round draft pick.

I think this is probably close enough to a wash. Both teams were helped out of a jam.
The package looks better to a casual fan with Berglund and Sobotka included, but that's more of a benefit to St Louis than it is to Buffalo. They are decent depth players that are overpaid for what they provide. Depth doesn't move the needle, but freeing up the cap space necessary to add a significant player does. So if anything, the scales tip in St Louis' direction.
Buffalo got what they wanted. Sort of. It's just going to cost them over $20M in the end, when they could have gotten the equivalent of a 1st, 2nd, and Thompson anyway, had they paid the signing bonus ($7.5M) and been patient.
O'Reilly's time was limited in either case, so at least they got peace of mind by putting that situation behind them.

Sabres get 2 cap dumps and a bottom 6 prospect and 2 picks, STL wins. I dont like it unless Thompson is ready to step into the 3C spot, even then...

Bergevin could have had O'Reilly, but he (rightfully) wouldn't give up the 3rd overall pick, on top of their other demands.
This isn't the package Buffalo wanted, and it's not the price they offered him to Montreal for. It's the one they were stuck with because they played hardball with their original asking price.

Buffalo got the rough equivalent of Poehling, a pick in the 20-24 range next year, and a pick somewhere after number 45 that's 3 years away.
If that was the price for Montreal, O'Reilly would be a Hab.

Both teams wins here, cause both got what they want and need to. Blues got their top 6 center with some overpayment, but they trade 2 another overpayed players who turns the things even.

As for Sabres, they got depth players, a good prospect and 2 high picks. Everything that they need. If Sabres were a contender, then the trade would be bad for them. But as a building team, it's a good one for sure.

So, that's win/win trade.

STL won the trade. Man remember when they traded away stastny and got a 2018 1st...small moves like that which can be somewhat controversial allow moves like this...2019 1st round pick...easier to handle. Smart moves by STL.

Exactly. A dumb rookie GM move by Botterill. I think Poehling has a better ceiling than Thompson. Either way he hard balled himself into a corner. Perhaps he just didn't want ROR in conference.

This trade is.. McCarron Shaw Alzner 2nd-2019 2nd-2020.. even after all the Pacioretty debate.. Buffalo loses the trade anyway. What a farce. Habs are cursed.

Not completely loving this. This is hard for me because I sort of have a hockey crush on O'Reilly. I love everything about his game. He brings a lot more than just his points. Coaches dream player.

Looks like we got some spare and decining parts. A young prospect center with potential (maybe). Not impressed with his stats. (In fairness I don't know any of these players well) The sum of all this is less than O'Reilly. Blues win by a hair in the short term.

The gamble is on the bag of magic beans that are the late 1st and 2nd rounders. If either of these players pay off the Sabres win. Only time will tell.

For now it's even-ish, I think looking back in 4 years you'll see the Sabres got the better end of this.

Blues win. Got rid of not the main prospect in the blues prospect pool and unloaded two bad contracts. Good job St. Louis.
