...and now he's a Conn Smythe winner.

You may now proceed to laugh even harder at Sabres fans.

Good thing Buffalo got rid of that cancer loser only to have him win a Cup playing w/ the Dirty Blues wink... Yeah anybody that thinks Buffalo won this never looked at his faceoff stats or his PMs smile.

Buffalo gets a hefty haul, but I think the first and second are more like tokens of gratitude for taking on Sobotkas and Berglunds iffy contracts. Blues get a guy who albeit overpaid wins faceoffs and backchecks, great player. I still think that Buffalo wins though, because of the inclusion of Thompson.

Wait a year or two to rank a trade. STL won the Cup, so they won the trade

Not completely loving this. This is hard for me because I sort of have a hockey crush on O'Reilly. I love everything about his game. He brings a lot more than just his points. Coaches dream player.

Looks like we got some spare and decining parts. A young prospect center with potential (maybe). Not impressed with his stats. (In fairness I don't know any of these players well) The sum of all this is less than O'Reilly. Blues win by a hair in the short term.

The gamble is on the bag of magic beans that are the late 1st and 2nd rounders. If either of these players pay off the Sabres win. Only time will tell.

For now it's even-ish, I think looking back in 4 years you'll see the Sabres got the better end of this.

Only 3 years laters, but thought I'd let you know blues DOMINATED this deal.

I can't stand this narrative that somehow the Blues lost this trade because of the standings. ROR is our leading scorer and hasn't done anything to question his work ethic/dedication/leadership abilities. He's not the one to blame for the Blues sucking - in fact, we've been bad for an entire calendar year at this point, long before ROR joined the team. I can't imagine where we'd be without making the trade... it wouldn't be at the top of the league, that's for sure.

luckily our gm was wise enough to put top 10 protection it, but yeah, with the way the Blues are playing, even losing another pick in the teens could be pretty brutal.

Reviewing this off season Boterill crushed it. And my thoughts have changed to give Buffalo the Win on this one. Goals are our most needed thing (along with a laundry list of others...lol). Just on the existing "now" players (Berglund + Sobotka = 28 goals) vs (O'Reilly 24 goals) So I think it's actually close just on this but still STL win based on money we're paying.

Now add in the future of Thompson and the draft picks. Clear Buffalo win, but not for years. Which is OK in my book.

Our defense is much better now and in the future too. (Dahlin plus this years D heavy draft)

We had the worst goaltending in the league last year. Sub 0.900 save percentage. I'd estimate a 0.920 average for 2019 with upgraded tenders and D.

We'll see how it all pans out but I give BOTS a 9 out of 10 in the off season (assuming Reinhart gets signed reasonable and long term).

Prediction: Challenging for playoff spot.

I was more commenting on the trade being a loss as the 1st the blues gave up is looking to be a lottery pick
Makes a huge diff

Isn't it funny how they actually gave up pick 31... who would have guessed.

At the time, I thought it was a fair deal...and still do.
ROR wasn't doing that well in Buffalo. Buffalo got rid of his 6m contact and then gained even more cap when Berglund retired from the NHL. So Buffalo had all that cap space to do something constructive.
Unfortunately for Sabres fans, Sabres management wasted that cap on 9m X 8 years Skinner. So the intent and timing of the trade was OK for Buffalo. Obviously St Louis did really well. ROR found his second wind, and really helped the Blues win a Cup.

This is not a fair deal for the sabres. They have... Tage Thopmson left from this deal. And a first round pick last year... don't even know who that was.
Meanwhile the blues have a Conn Smythe winner. I think I'll take the Conn Smythe winner over a couple of meh prospects.

But let's say the Sabres had kept ROR...they still would have finished out of the playoffs. So Sabres got Thompson, the pick and 6m in cap space. If they had used that 6m in cap space wisely then the deal evens up a lot more. Of course the Blues did well, but if the Sabres had kept ROR, it wouldn't have change their fortunes.

I suppose... but they could have gotten a better package I'm sure.

They tried but ROR didn't have the reputation he has now. Heck in January 2019, that first rounder looked like it was going to be top 10, then the Blues got fire and won the Cup a few months later.

pretty sure this post is the reason buffalo's winning streak ended and they collapsed into mediocrity again.

The stages of this trade have been unique.

When it happened, I originally thought it was a decent deal for both sides with Thompson looking alright at UConn and showed potential with St. Louis.

Then Thompson struggled in Buffalo, and I was of the opinion that St Louis had fleeced Buffalo (The Stanley Cup win for St Louis also didn't help Botterill's case)

But now... looks like a decent deal again. Really nice to see Thompson take the next step. Tall forwards everywhere rejoice in his success.

Still a massive win for St.Louis. ROR was the main reason they won the Cup. Tage is having a great season, but Buffalo is still near the bottom of the league.

if they had the ROR from this season the sabres would be below the basement

Not what ROR was traded to St.Louis for. It was a win in the short term move and it worked. Buffalo was to win in the long term, and it's not there... yet

Both teams win, really, but if a winner had to be picked then yes, it would be STL.
