The cap goes up 3M next year leaving us with about 17.5m for next year
Mathews gets 10m
Marner gets 6
Karlsson get another 5m
You trade Marleau's third year and get somethin back for him
Leaving us with 2m in cap space for 2019/20
Replenishing some of what we lose getting Karlsson

He'll be gone by then. Ottawa isn't keeping him if he don't resign. I highly doubt that

Seriously, at least the hawks won some cups before they went into cap hell.

Let him go then. That package is ridiculous and makes the team worse.

How did you make it work? You underpaid Matthews by at least 1 million and Marner by at least $2 million Trading Marleau isn't a given and you're still leaving yourself pretty much cap strapped here.

Exactly that's not a sustainable roster for a long cup run for the Leafs.

I said 10 more for Matthews, that mean 11
7 more for Marner makes 8
Marleau is tradeable for 1yr
The both close to 1M now, you are not accounting for that

You don't think we would not have a great chance at a cup adding Karlsson

There's all kinds of ridiculous going on in this thread.

1. Please stop thinking about Karlsson. An $11m d-man in not in the foreseeable future. Melnyk would demand the leafs overpay and it just won't be worth it.

2. Stop trading Marleau. He has a full NMC clause and just uprooted his family to come here. Only way I see his contract coming off the books is if he retires after this year and the leafs trade his cap hit along with a pick or prospect to a cap floor team

3. Cap Hell. C'mon. Cap hell is when you have a team riddled with past-their-prime veterans on expensive, long-term contracts and you're up against the cap ceiling. There isn't a single player on the leaf roster that would be difficult to trade. If anything, it's an enviable position to be in to have so many assets that you get to pick and choose which ones make the most sense to move forward with.

4. Trying to assume what the RFA's will sign for now is fools game. We know for sure that Marner and Matthews played integral roles in getting Tavares signed. Is it possible Dubas & Co. had a conversation with their big RFA's about a willingness to sign for a bit less to fit everyone in? Sure. Is it possible that Matthews is going to demand McDavid money and Marner will want north of $10m? Sure. It's wait and see now....but in any event, I don't think adding another big contract is the answer.

Why not, the core would all be signed long term
Matthews 8yrs
Marner 8yrs
Tavares 6 years
Karlsson 8 years
Rielly 3 years
Kadri 3 years
Hyman 2 years
Brown 1 year

And we would have 2.5M in cap space, which is not a lot granted
But no more big payouts on the immediate horizon
Sounds pretty sustainable to me.

To win in this league you need the formula
2 big horses down the middle
a good goalie
and a Norris caliber defenceman

We just went from being a B team by adding JT
Adding Karlsson we would be a cup favorite

True about them not wanting to trade him to Toronto
Which is why I made it a sit up and listen trade offer
There gonna want a good D prospect why I added Liliagren
Gardiner is addition by subtraction too many giveaways
With Karlsson we don't lose that offensive flair Gardiner does bring

I highly doubt I'm off by much on Matthews at 11 + Marner at 8

It is a lot, but good luck getting a norris caliber Dman without paying a lot
Don't even think about Gardiner being in the deal because Karlsson replaces him

So its really
Nylander
Liliagren
and the picks

No..you're likely in the ballpark on the Marner and Matthews deals...I do know that Marner's camp thinks he's worth closer to Matthews than Nylander tho...so I feel that may be the toughest deal to get done.

Gardiner is a solid second-pairing d-man. For every glaring giveaway there's an equally impressive up the middle-Karlsson esque tape-to-tape pass that creates a scoring opportunity for the leafs. I'm okay if he prices himself out of a new contract from the Leafs, but he's not a throw-in for any deal, IMO.

I'm not a huge fan of Karlsson's defensive game. He's an offensive wizard from the back-end...but he can be soft along the boards and get beat by an aggressive forecheck....I'd take Doughty over him 10 times out of 10 but that ship has sailed, unfortunately. Leafs are likely better off with Gardiner and the cap space than Karlsson less the cap space and all the other assets we're giving up to get him.

I'd have a look again at the asking price at the trade deadline to treat him as a rental tho.

But he's still in the deal and has value. You've got a 50+ point Dman that you want to forget about and a 60+ point player coming off an ELC that you're giving away for a guy with a bum leg. Sure he's good but not worth those 2 players let alone all the picks and their top defensive prospect.

Dorion grants permission for teams to talk Extension with Karlsson
Clearly he has told Ottawa he is gone
Looks like he is getting traded sooner rather than later

Every player and their defensive deficiencies are under the microscope in Toronto. Karlsson would be no different. Doughty had more games at minus 4 last year than Gardiner did, they all have bad games. Paying them 11M a year to do it makes it even worse.

Matthews might make a million more than Marner and Nylander, not 4. Forget about McDavid, forget about Eichel, those teams aren't built to win like the Leafs.
7-8M for Matthews is plenty.
