Why would Montreal want Brassard and his cheap one-year cap hit? He makes more sense on a contending team.

And why would Pittsburgh want to be left with Riley Sheahan as the 3rd line center? That's the reason they traded for Brassard in the first place.

Montreal may want Brassard bc he is a french centre and can be a stop-gap until Kotkaniemi and Poehling arrive. If they dont want Brassard, they can flip him for more assets
Pittsburgh may want to trade Brassard bc of his underwhelming post season and he did not mesh with Kessel that well. Sheahan is more affordable and better suited as a 3 than Brassard.

Brassard was playing very well (6 or 7 game point streak) at the end of the season before getting a groin injury that bothered him in the playoffs. This has been confirmed by the GM. Kessel was dealing with multiple small injuries and was ineffective with all of the centers he played with in the postseason.

Brassard's cap hit is 3 million. That's great for a 50ish point center. Producing 50 points is also something that Riley Sheahan is not capable of. His actual production from a shot standpoint is that of a fourth line center, and this is even after playing for most of last season with Kessel. A fourth line center playing on the third line is not ideal for a team trying to make a deep playoff run. With the addition of Cullen, who can play left wing one the fourt line, the team has two cheap centers that can play a penalty killing role and win face-offs. Brassard doesn't need to do that. The team's center depth is ideal as is.

Brassard gives them a C while they wait for Kotkaniemi and Poehling (probably ready next year), they can flip
Him at the deadline for assets. Maata solves the LD with Weber and they get a high second round pick as extra.
