TBL Erik Karlsson Trade

Created by: LouRules
Team: 2018-19 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 4, 2018
Published: Jul. 5, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils deal Miles Wood, Jesper Bratt, John Quenneville, a 1st, 2nd, and two 4ths to obtain Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat and the contracts of Bobby Ryan and Ryan Callahan.

Tampa deals Point, Palat, and a 1st for a signed 8/88 Erik Karlsson, John Quenneville, and a 4th, while shedding the Callahan contract and avoiding the Ryan contract.

Ottawa deals Karlsson with Ryan for a return of NJD 1, 2, and 4, TB 1, Jesper Bratt, and a signed Miles Wood.

8 player trade. Devils are interested if they feel Bobby Ryan can return to 2/3rds previous production. Pairing him with two-way Travis Zajac and the skilled Ondrej Palat could give him that opportunity. In terms of cap: Johansson, Boyle, and Lovejoy’s money go to Point, Butcher, Zacha, and Mueller. Greene, Callahan, and Zajac’s cap space go to Hall, Hischier, and Vatanen’s raises the following year.

But Tampa gets a signed Karlsson!? Isn’t that the ultimate return?

I think the framework is there for a pretty solid deal that could help all sides. I'm not sure that Tampa would want to give up Point, Palat, and a 1st (obviously dumping Callahan is a good thing), but it's close. Good idea.

Tampa says no without a second thought. Maybe Yzerman gives up Sergachev for Karlsson, but there's no way he would move Point, much less Point and Palat. Those are their two most defensively responsible forwards who can shut down other teams' top lines, and the Lightning desperately need that. Karlsson is more offense-oriented, and the last thing Tampa needs right now is to sacrifice defense to improve offense. They have Stamkos, Kucherov, Point, Johnson, and Gourde all scoring 20 goals (Palat likely would have too without the injury), and lead the League in goals for last season. Meanwhile, they were only average in goals against (which isn't good if you're contending for a Cup and have a goalie who was nominated for the Vezina).

Thanks for this level of insight, for the same reasons above is why I targeted Point and Palat for my devils. Maybe substitute Tyler Johnson for Palat and have Devils move Zacha to LW. Or add Steve Santini (our young defensive shutdown RHD) somewhere in place of a pick.

Trading Tyler Johnson seems much more likely than trading Palat, but Johnson has a full NTC that he'd have to waive. I've heard that he may waive to go to Seattle (his hometown), but I don't see him leaving Tampa to go to any team that isn't a Cup contender. And I don't think Yzerman would trade Point for anything, really. In general, Tampa getting Karlsson seems unlikely unless Karlsson makes it clear that he would just leave with no return in free agency anyway and insists on being traded only to Tampa. The rumors are that he wants to be in Tampa, but obviously those should be taken with a grain of salt. If that's true, they can just give prospects or picks to a rebuilding team to help with cap. Point is essentially un-touchable. The Devils aren't the type of third team I see getting involved.

I love how Tampa fans get the grand prize in all this and still can complain about it. You get Karlsson!
