This is an extreme case of a low-risk, high-reward contract. Scratch that, this is a no-risk signing.

It is a one way contract, which is why he signed with Columbus. Other teams were offering two way contracts with higher salary (MTL), but he wants to stay in the Nhl at all costs.
Good signing by the Blue Jackets !!!

You can still send him to the AHL on a one way contract I think....you just have to pay him his NHL salary while he's down there?

Is the difference that he has to clear waivers when he's sent down on a 1 way contract?
(so any other team can pick him up when he's demoted?)

You're right a one way contract has been paid at his NHL salary regardless of where he plays. That's why CBJ did the one way, in case of demotion, less chance of claimed
Even if he claimed by another team, he has the stay in that teams NHL roster, or he can reclaimed by the Jackets and send to the minors waiver free (with a few twists)

Interesting.

Does Duclair have attitude or personality problems? Or is the issue more about effort & back checking?

I'm still not sure why Chicago let him go & why this is the best he could get? His numbers seem average for the 3rd line (and at 22 he still has lots of potential).

Chicago does not have enough cap space. They have a ton of contracts they can't buy out (ex: Hossa, Seabrook). They chose to overpay at free agency.

Duclair's contract is league minimum....its not possible for it to be less expensive.....they could have signed this contract & traded literally anyone else on the team.....and they'd have more cap space. So I still don't get it. There's gotta be some kind of issue.

Makes no sense, considering they spent more money on a worse player (Kunitz).
