Here is the issues with Tampa obtaining Karlsson,

1) It will be extremely costly from an asset standpoint (Its going to cost a tonne)
2) He's going to sign at least an 8 year 11 million dollar deal that starts when he is turning 29. (That means 7 of those 8 years are when he's 30+, making that huge money spent on a diminishing asset)
3) If you keep Kucherov, the team will lose so much depth to make the cap work.
4) The 3rd pairing D is going to be trash and the 3rd and 4th lines will be much reduced.

Still it will make for an entertaining 2nd round matchup between Toronto and Tampa in the coming season. Offensive firepower vs elite defence. It'll be interesting to see how that would play out. You could likely say the top lines are even, then you give Toronto a huge edge in 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines (especially the 3rd line, Kadri would be the 2nd best centre on Tampa), but you'd give Tampa a huge edge in the top two defensive pairings. The goalies are about even as well.

So it would be a great series. These two teams will be battling for top spots in the east for the next couple of years for sure.

So you know for sure he's going to be 11 million??.. did you see the draft go the way you wanted it?? Being tax free is a advantage??

Like it was for Tavares? Its a deal but its not as big of a deal as the media makes it out to be. These guys will get big money, they know that and let their agents get them the dollars but they also want a good fit and want to win. Karlsson has already said he's going to get what he deserves and he deserves Doughty Money, so he'll get it.

That's right, he'll get the same money as JT. 9.5-10m in TB FLA!!!

11 Million, he'll argue he's won more Norris's and scores more points. He'll get 11.

Nobody knows what he'll get! But FYI 11m in TOR = 9.5 in FLA. Fine he wants more than JT, 11.5m in TOR = 10m in FLA... Pretty simple. Personally I wouldn't give more than that, his one leg could make his contract resemble Webers.

All valid points, but I wanted to zero in on these

2) Yzerman would let Girardi and Coburn walk, freeing up 6.5 million in cap. In my fantasy scenario, Johansson would also leave the team, freeing up $11 million total.

4) With Karlsson and Hedman on two separate pairings, they would be on the ice for 80% of the game. ELC / cheap vets could easily plug into a bottom pairing role.

Yeah I wouldn't be taking on Karlsson if it was my choice, I see him declining rapidly if he loses a step in his 30's. Without his speed, he's going to get hit a lot and get pushed around.

I hear what you're saying in #4, however, when that bottom pair is on the ice, it could be pretty rough. It was like when Polak was on the ice last season for TO. He's fine if he's playing either a really slow team or 3rd and 4th liners but the moment he gets caught out against good players, he gets wrecked. That is what Tampa will face and also they will lose so much forward depth to make the cap work and that'll be harmfull as well. I think you have to either have 3 amazing pairings like Nashville, or you need great depth in your forward lines to mask flaws like these. Tampa I think would be better without Karlsson.

Kucherov on 9.5, one of the best point producer's in the league. Obviously you've never worked tax free. One of the jobs im on is tax free. Bc of being treaty native. I make 500 more a week then the next guy. That's on a small scale. So I couldn't imagine the tax bracket at that money. In Canada its stoopid

The not tax does help but in certain places the endorsement work can make up the difference and surpass it even. But that's a different story entirely. In a few years Tampa will have a tonne of cap problems because Stamkos will be declining as he moves into his 30's and then his contract is almost untradeable. Don't believe me? Corey Perry.

I believe those are two entirely different players, you can make any argument with any player as you choose. But that reality is we both cant predict what will happen. It would be different if Tampa had a lot of bad contracts.. But they're setup really good. Exceptional goaltending. Great goal scoring and a pretty decent d core. Once they add karlsson... game over
