Three Way Karlsson Deal with Buffalo

Team: 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2018
Published: Jul. 7, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
According to an unverified Twitter user who claims to be a former NHL employee with inside contacts, Buffalo is getting involved as the third team, and this is supposedly the final trade. I don't understand it from the Sabres' perspective, but I'm wondering if others think this seems plausible and if this would be a good move from each team's perspective.

It is unclear whether the pick coming from Buffalo would be the Sabres' actual pick, or the Sharks'. It's also unclear how Tampa trades their 1st round pick, since it could be owned by the Rangers, but there could be a condition on it or it could be a 2020 pick instead.

The rumors also said that they "may" be trying to get Tyler Johnson involved to give to the Sabres. I don't think Johnson particularly wants to waive his NTC for Buffalo, but he would get a lot of minutes there if that's what he's after.

wait, so buffalo takes on THREE cap dumps and gives up what is surely to be a lottery pick for what is surely to be a late 1st round pick and sergachev AND we have to trade our 23 year old #1 RHD who has played 27 minutes a game and put up 40 points since he was 20 and is on a great deal?

OH MY GOD

Omg. It's just terrible for Buffalo, especially since we don't have room under the cap for all these dumps.

This maybe what theyre asking Buffalo to take on but theirs no way this is what Buffalo would want. Ryan is good, but is way over payed and cant stay healthy, Callahan is also good but over payed. If Sabres are talking Sergachev then that confirms Dahlin is playing on the right, so maybe Risto wants out because hes not number 1 RHD anymore? Their's no way Buffalo would give up Risto and a first for this package though. It makes no sense. Its probably safe to unfollow that guy, cause hes just making stuff up.

The problem is, we just don't have enough room under the cap for all these players. In any case it will be necessary to reset Okposo or Pominville, and maybe even both. Well, if I were Botterill, I'd ask Yanni Gourde, not Tyler Johnson.

the problem is the trade is nonsensical. 2 more LHD for Buffalo? Theyd be starting the season with 8 NHL ready LHD for 3 spots. Then they are moving out a RHD which would leave them with 2 NHL ready d on the right side and Dahlin for either side. Plus you add in the cap problem. Id like the Sabres to do something and would gladly take on Ryan and Callahan, but Im not trading from a position of need nor moving a first to take them on

Girardi - RHD, Sergachev - LHD. I don't know what kind of rumor this is, but I think if Botterill trades Risto, then he's going to ask the striker in the top 6.

Well described. I could see BUF getting a level better with the players coming back, but it’s an awkward structure with lots of pieces. And the pick swap is really foolish.

Getting Sergachev, T Johnson, Ryan would be solid lineup improvements. But the Callahan and Girardi and pick swap are steps backwards for Ristolainen’s value. And Johnson isn’t confirmed in the rumor yet either.

Yzerman is the best GM in the deal, and I suspect that we’ll all be looking at the final packages and saying, “this was a pretty brialliant play by TB”, and I’m sure the structure will also start solving the cap crunch to resign Kucherov.

Girardi is a dump they are selling high on, he looked good because the team around him was good

I know that Girardi is a dump, I just clarified that he is a RHD. The most valuable asset here Sergachev, but I would not change Risto for Sergachev , so the deal should still be a striker in the top 6.

So Tampa trades Ristolainen, R. and 2019 1st round pick (BUF) for Karlsson? Why Buffalo not do that and have Dahlin and Karlsson on the same team and not take any cap dumps? I cannot see Buffalo making this trade. Then no Ryan, no Callahan, and not helping Steve Yzerman win the cup.

Just to take on the cap dumps of Ryan and Callahan worth tampa's 1st and a prospect. This is down right silly for Buffalo to add Ristolainen and a 1st for Sergachev, M and a near 2nd.
