Wow I thought he'd get more money than this, bargain signing by the Sharks.

Surprised? I mean, he's a decent 3rd pair guy, and I feel like a bunch of teams would have given him at least a little bit more.

Maybe he took a little bit less to stay. I mean, was he able to join a better team for more money and have a guaranteed spot? Going down the list, I don't see it. Tampa, no. Pittsburgh, maybe a spot but not the money. Boston, no. Nashville, no. Winnipeg, no. Vegas, maybe the money, but not a spot. Los Angeles, no. St. Louis, no.

The problem for DeMelo is he is a 3rd pairing guy who really hasn't been a full-time player. He was going to get this kind of money from some team (maybe a little bit more on a team like Vancouver), but this was probably the best fit in terms of money and quality of team.

The other thing too is that in two years he is a UFA no matter what. Maybe he plays a lot in the next two years and gets a bigger payday when the market might be more open.

I had him on all of my AGM teams that required a third-pairing or seventh defenceman at $1.333M for 3 years (that's almost 50% off). Maybe I'll get a second shot at him in 2020.

I was thinking $1.25M, so we were all off.
