Ken Holland showing why he's one of the best RFA negotiators. What a great AAv for the Wings.

Mantha should fire his agent.

Generally agree, great AAV, only point of concern would be the two year term. The short bridge will mean Mantha will be getting a big pay day sooner when he has arbitration rights (that would be my guess as to why the price is so team friendly). Wings won't be cup contenders in these two years to take advantage of the lower price. Still definitely happy to get him signed and have money to get Larkin signed too

Steal.

Agreed, I figured for a two-year bridge deal he would’ve got 4.5 million a year. Huge steal.

only 300k more than Andreas Athanasiou is a steal

gotta clear cap space for Dylan Larkin though

Good bridge deal. But Larkin hasn’t signed yet.... does DET have any cap space left for him????

I know offer sheets almost never happen, but this is probably the easiest it’ll ever be to do one on Larkin. DET wouldn’t be able to match

I thought he would get 4 million per, and people said I was too low.
Guess I still had better idea then them.

So, with his contract expiring before the 2021 season, will he not need to be protected from the expansion draft or would that have not mattered anyways

No that's about fair for him. Schwartz had better numbers and drafted in the mid 1st too. He's getting paid about a million more. Tatar had slightly worse numbers and got 2.75 million so he's going to get more than that. Mantha is pretty streaky, didn't always show up to games, and not great defensively. That's why he got a bridge deal. He hashed things out with Blash and he's boxing over the summer to bring some fire to his game. He's must likely going to have a great year and get a big upgrade on his next contract.

Franzen will be put on LTIR. So that's about 6.8 million left to sign him. Larkin should be in the 6-6.5 million (long term) ball park. On the off chance he signs an offer sheet, one of the vets (Nyquist, Helm, or Ericsson) would be moved or bought out.

I agree that a perfect scenario would be to lock him up long term as he looks like a 30+ goal scorer. However, Mantha said at the end of the year that he only wanted a bridge deal so he can try raise his value before being locked in for the long term. I think this contract is great as it keeps Mantha an RFA when done, has a very favorable cap hit, and ends when the wings will have some of the other bad contracts (e.g. Ericsson, Daley, Green) coming off the books.

Great AAV for the bridge, but I wonder if it would have made more sense to lock him up now, and turned him into a JVR/Pacioretty type steal for the next 6-7 years. I know their current cap situation tied their hands a little, as they have some truly horrendous contracts on the books.

My first reaction was "overpaid" but when you look deeper, this looks like a good deal. The kid took his time developing into a pro, but is on a pretty good trajectory. When you look at his comparable contracts, they all have similar points for similar AAV/Cap%, but the comparables have played significantly more games than Mantha.

I look at Tyler Toffoli a lot here, because Toffoli played two NHL season and got a $3,250,000/year deal. He had very similar scoring numbers. Basically identical earlier stages of their careers, but you hope Mantha doesn't regress offensively like Toffoli did the last two season.

Overall, good deal.
