Here's the Problem

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2018-19 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2018
Published: Jul. 12, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the team as currently structured with the three outstanding rookies in the lineup, but without Dylan Larkin. Two things stand out: (1) the $4.1M in cap room, and (2) the hole on the third defense pair (substituting Dennis Cholowski or Libor Sulak for Luke Witkowski only makes the cap problem more than $80K worse). Bottom line: either somebody gets traded or Larkin takes a $4M bridge deal. That's why the trade I suggested in my earlier post (with Anaheim for LD Marcus Pettersson) makes sense.

Here's the real problem.

This team isn't even close to being a wild card team. Detroit will miss the playoffs this year without a doubt. Spending all the money they did this off season made zero sense and its clear Holland is out of touch. That or he feels he owes it to Zetterberg to try to be competitive, but its a mistake. They have no chance of competing with the top teams in their division and have about 8 teams they'll have to pass to make a wildcard spot.

The time for a rebuild was about 3 seasons ago.

I'm in a professional communications field, and you write better than me.

Not going to lie, I looked over what I wrote to see if I made a stupid grammar error or something. Since I didn't find anything, I'll say thanks! I do enjoy writing and was a radio broadcaster for 7 years, so I have some experience I guess.

Maybe I should try to make a career out of this. LOL

I agree with your assessment that this team isn't close to a wild-card spot, although stranger things have happened; Look at Colorado last year. Holland is not out of touch, he has been a top NHL GM for the past two decades for a reason. The rebuild has been happening for the past 3 seasons; Look at the trades and deals Detroit has made in that time. It has been alleged that Holland was instructed to keep the streak going for as long as possible, and that was the reason for the contracts and trades he made. I am critical of his propensity to throw NTC's on contracts, which are hampering our ability to trade away the contracts we do have. Holland is not adding the veteran players because he feels he owes it to Zetterberg alone. He has outlined his philosophy on surrounding young talent with proven veterans as mentors. Looking at franchises like Arizona, Edmonton, and Buffalo, you can see the impact of losing and not having a competitive team has on developing players. Taylor Hall goes from Edmonton to New Jersey and wins the Hart this year. Ryan O'Riely losing his love of the game in Buffalo. You don't want to have your players feeling like they are going out there and not be competitive, it breeds contempt and complacency, and stunts development.

Detroit wasn't competing for a playoff spot last year, but they were fairly competitive; Look at how many one-goal games they lost. I would suspect that this is the plan for this year as well. Not good enough for a playoff spot, but not a pushover either. These veterans are only on this team for two more years in most cases.
