Under 5 million for a 23 year old 40 point guy that has an opportunity to play the power play with the top unit, this is potentially a steal in the late years of this contract!

His deal matches Nazem Kadri's and J.T. Miller's to name a few.

Much better than the $5-6 million AAV that was being rumored.

Potential 60+ point player. Seems like a low-risk and a potential high reward deal to me. As long as he doesn't get worse -or injured, looks to be a good deal.

Both Hanifin and Lindholm are calculated gambles for the Flames; however, I think this contract is about right for Lindholm considering he is a 40-50 point guy. remember people Hanifin and Lindholm have played their entire young careers with the Carolina hurricanes. the Hurricanes highest finish in the entire time they were with them was 10th in the East. A guy who puts up 40-50 points on a bottom of the league team has extremely high potential to be a 60 point guy on a team like the flames who are in a win now/soon situation. he will fit in on either the first or the second line and I wouldn't be surprised that both Hanifin and Lindhlom have career years.

Heres to hoping anyways

I don't know how anyone can say this is a bad deal. This is a standard across the board contract for this type of player. Any less and its a steal, anymore and its starting to get up there. Keep in mind this player was in Carolina throughout his career and that team hasn't been known as an offensive team. He has a lot of two way potential. He can shut down on PK and he can contribute on the second line. Given more minutes offensively with better line mates will increase his point totals. Signing a guy with upside for under 5 mill in the meat of his potential is a solid contract. He's 23 and the contract ends at 29. NHL players statistically reach their peak at 27 in this current NHL. They won't be hindered with a long term deal on aging years. To me, this is a steal for these NHL years.

Also to note, this guy was up to 55% on face-offs. The best was Vermette at 60%. His goal totals increased with 4% more offensive zone starts. He played with Staal and Aho for 12.07% of the season and Skinner and Di Giuseppe for 9. 76% of the season. Given they line him up with Monahan and Gaudreau, his numbers should jump fast. With the signing of Neal, he maybe pushed down due to his defensive abilities over that of Neals. He also maybe pushed down as Calgary said they were going to try Tkachuk with Monahan and Gaudreau prior to acquiring Neal and Lindholm. But the upside is still tremendous

This is going to look like a steal if he gets to play with Gaudreau and Monahan.

So if he 4.85m for 45 points a year
Nylander is 6-6.5, people calling for 7-8 for Nylander is too much

Maybe the AAV is roughly equal to your point production
90 Pts = 9m
100 Pts = 10M

etc etc

If you look at the numbers it seems they look at the total production, not per year.

Call me biased/optimistic but I really do think that Elias can flirt with the 60 -70 point range if he plays with Gaud/Mony on the 1st line and PP (and stays healthy).... he may not be the 50 point player that everyone has set his potential cap at.

I 100% agree and even if his cap is 50 points I am still not mad about a 4.85 mil for a two way winger who puts up 50 points. backlund is making more money and producing the same
