If Matthews signed it, don't match. You know what happens to players that sign offer sheets? They bounce from team to team because they are only thinking of themselves.

Well I don't know if would be cap hell for the Leafs, they obviously would have to trade someone to make the cap work for them if they matched the offer sheet. But looking at the Isles cap situation it doesn't work for them either. They have untradeable contracts, Ladd, Boychuk , Komarov for example and Barzel still to sign.
So the Leafs don't match, they get to spend the 11m they have earmarked for Matthews, which gets you good players in UFA and four first rounders from the Isles, some which are likely to lottery picks.

    Cap hell?
Pls. You can have Auston at $15m. You will never win paying him that much and you won't have 1st round pick for another 5 years so good luck building around him. This would fook you way worse than JT leaving and Lou giving your 4th line almost $11m LOL

Lets be real, the leafs are matching any Mathews offer sheet. Leaf fans would never forgive them if they let him walk for a few first round picks.
Also, the NYI will have 34,000,000 in cap space come 2019. They could afford him if they wanted.

and as for "Cap Hell"...even if the leafs sign Mathews at 12.5 (McDavid money, isn't as good as McDavid but can definitely command that) that leaves them with what...just over 6 million to fill a roster. Even if Hortons contract is somehow removed thats makes it more like 11 million to sign 3 forward, 3 D, and a back up goalie. of course you can fill some of those spots with previously drafted players, but I hardy think they will have 7 players in their AHL team/farm system that are NHL ready in 2019. Plus you need to consider all the players they re up in the upcoming season(Kasperi Kapenen, Gardiner).

Way too risky for the Isles, What if he has a career ending injury.
Then you have no 1st rounders for 4 years
