Let's See if the Minny Guys Like This

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2018
Published: Jul. 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a follow-up to an idea that was proposed earlier today, in rather more complex form. The problem is that with only Hainsey's $3M coming off the books next year, it will be impossible to give a $10M raise to Matthews and a $7M raise to Marner plus raises to Johnsson and Kapanen without trading either Nylander or Andersen.

That definitely seems like a deal the Wild would do.

You're right about the Leafs signing and keeping Matthews, Nylander and Marner, it would be likely impossible to resign Gardiner or even take on the contract of Brodin.
The Leafs may go with a younger defence instead, which obviously has perils. The optimum option for the Leafs would be sign a UFA like Ellis and then get young, good, cheap assets for Nylander in a trade. That would work out cap wise, and the Leafs get assets.
I've maintained that the Tavares signing "might be a trade". It's really a trade of 7m Nylander for 11m Tavares plus whatever assets you get for Nylander in a trade. That's what I think the scenario will be either this year or next.

Gardiner is a better player than Brodin. I get the compensation for the difference in contract length, but the picks are way too much. There's an interest for Minn to get Gardiner, given his origins, but he has a lot of trade value. For the Leafs, ideal would be to get Spurgeon in return to address the RHD issues, but I'm not sure if that works for the Wild.

Brodin is hard for MN to trade right now with Suter's injury. Suter's recovery timeline puts him barely back in time for the start of the season, if everything goes right. His injury is supposed to be a career ending injury in other sports, so if/when he comes back, how good will he be? I really wouldn't want Gardiner as my top pair LD and the 2nd and 3rd pair LD's not even having a season of combined NHL games.

The value is probably an overpay, but the Wild probably pass because of team factors.
