Minor adjustment: Next season - youth influx

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 19, 2018
Published: Jul. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In house:
1) Sign Lee to an 7 year extension and name him Captain
2) Trade Eberle at the deadline for picks+prospects should the Isles be out of playoff contention. (Wahlstrom slides in as 2RW next season)
3) Trade Nelson at the deadline for the same reason as Eberle
4) Move Beauvillier to 3C (natural position is C) and play Bellows 2LW
5) Buyout Clutterbuck and Boychuk

External:
1) Sign Duchene to fill C hole
2) Dobson gets NHL call up (starts on 3rd pair but will probably move up the ranks quickly)
3) Sign a top-4 D with the money saved by trading Eberle
4) Sign a goaltender or convince Ilya Sorokin to come to the NHL (in this case I used Bobrovsky who I think could kill two birds here)

Will have approximately $15M in cap space for Barzal (and more) next season ($6.6 avail now + $5.5M off books + cap increase)

Bold moves. I like them. Retooling the team in one year to be much better that it is now is hard, but seems possible.

I was trying to do something similar, over all looks great. I might have to leave Boychuck - someone pointed out to me that his buy out goes back to $5 million in 20-21. Dobson might not ready but that could be Aho.

That's interesting. Just ran the buyout calculator on the site and you're right. Had to have been structured that way by his agent to dissuade the Isles from doing exactly that. It does go down again to 944k though after that. Could be worth carrying? Not sure

Great... except for the part where Boychuck's buyout costs you almost his entire cap hit in 20-21 and 21-22, you know those years where you'll need to extend barzal for 9 mil, Pulock for 5-6 million, and bellows whos TBD but could be up 4 million. this doesn't work. Ellis is not a contract the isles can take on and neither is bobrovsky, who will be getting a larger AAV than that. expect him to get more than price.

Similar point to trickydick55, I don't like a lot of the term you're giving to the UFA you're signing. We'll be right back in the same boat. I understand we may need to overpay to get people to come to LI, which is why draft & develop should always be the focus.

Just a question, why wouldn't you deal Eberle now rather than at the deadline? I think the return would be greater if the team acquiring gets a full year out of him.

Don't think it's a wise move to give up on the season before it begins. Team might surprise some people and overachieve.
