So they literally just split the difference between his asking price ($4 million) and the team's ($7 million). But why only one year? Now they get to do the same song and dance next year. Again.

Finally! At least it's one more year. He's totally out of Winnipeg next season. He hasn't made it more clear he wants out. Won't be surprised to see him flipped on or before the trade deadline.

Because it gives the new team next year a chance to resign him

He requested a trade 2 years ago and then rescinded it later in the season, I wonder what his thoughts are right now. He must be so confused

Not understanding the no votes here, the Jets have to sign him to that deal or he becomes an UFA.

Because the Jets should have just paid him for a long term deal.

I really don't know if it's Jets fault at all. Trouba seems to set his sights on being a UFA as soon as possible. Yes, maybe he doesn't like "playing behind" Myers and Buff, the Winnipeg weather, or the Jets travel.
He just might want to be in a different situation. And if the Jets don't trade him, he's doing what he can do under the CBA.

Yes but it is their fault for pissing him off the first go round. If they had of just paid him $5 for 6-8 initially he probably would have signed and they wouldn’t be in this situation.

"Player can only be subject to one (1) Club elected Salary Arbitration in his career " They can have as many player elected as they want in their career from the looks of it.

When the club continues to refuse to pay a player his worth, it is the clubs fault.

They wanna keep salaries down. They have 11.8m left after today
They be good this year, but Laine is prob getting 8-9m next year so that don't leave much left next year
Plus Myers and Wheeler will need new deals, not mention Trouba

Your point? Every team wants to keep salaries down but you have to pay your best players and they don’t like to do that. They have a lot of team friendly contracts but obviously their best D man wants to be paid what he is actually worth so that should have paid him and figured the rest out.

I think there needs to be a N/A option.

The Jets have to accept the deal, so you can't blame them. We have no idea if there was an opportunity to sign him long term, so it's hard to judge based on anything like that.

The Jets will get one more year of Trouba, and he will be motivated if he wants a big contract, and by creating interest, there is a better chance a team he wants to play for long term will be in the running if the Jets try to trade him next offseason. The biggest risk for the Jets would be if he doesn't want to sign an extension with that new team immediately, his value would be no different than if he were one year away from UFA status, as he can just elect for arbitration and likely just get a 1 year deal again which would bring him right to UFA status.

I think both sides are handling this as well as can be expected. There are no nasty rumors coming out, and neither side is disparaging the other. Trouba has played very well, said nothing but good things about his team, and hasn't sat out any actual games. He has no obligation to commit more than 7 years to the organization that drafted him and he will play his 6th for them this year. This leaves Winnipeg a scenario where they can get 6 years service out of him, and still receive some compensation for him from another team. It is what it is.

Personally I think Winnipeg should just go for it this year, and if he is still unwilling to re-sign, move him at next year's draft. I don't think there is a player Winnipeg could trade for that fills a bigger need than trading away Trouba would create.

It's my understanding that the Trouba contract hasn't been signed yet. Can't a long term deal still be agreed upon before the 48 hour window expires on Tuesday or did this have to occur prior to the the ruling?

Also don't the Jets still get to select the term of this arbitration award? Did they already do this? I'm assuming so as all media are reporting it as a one year deal. Player elected arbitration rarely goes this far, so excuse me for being unsure of the precise nature of the process.

I realize the reasons the Jets would select one year over two, I just thought it remained an option until the deal was complete.

No he won't. It will be either before this season starts or at the 2019 draft day(unless the Jets aren't in playoff contention in Feb, which would be a bitter fail)

The thing is Trouba has not been worth what he's been asking over the years. The first time he was asking for around $5 million a year and he was not worth it. This time he was asking for around $7 million a year and he's not worth that either. He's overvaluing himself. Plus add in the fact that he can't stay healthy over a full season.
